We’re looking forward to introducing you to S. Marie. Check out our conversation below.
S., really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, simply sitting outside with my cat has brought me incredible moments of joy. For a few hours in the evening, on days that I am able, I have been sitting in the grass and watching her explore, or reading under the passing clouds, or writing poems as sunlight siphons through the trees. I have found that taking these moments of stillness ignite my creative fire. The stillness I often avoid (for fear of ‘wasting time’) is usually the very thing I need.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am S. Marie, an author, artist, and graphic designer. I believe that my varying creative interests have given me a unique perspective and wide breadth of opportunities throughout my career. I enjoy painting with words and building fantastical worlds, both in written and painted form.
Lately, my focus has centered around my written works, though I do also create physical and digital paintings of places and beings in my universe, as well as illustrate children’s books, which I have enjoyed immensely.
My first novel, The Moon and Her Sun, and its sequel, The Lying Dark, are both available for purchase on Amazon in paperback and eBook format, with the audiobook of book one already released and the audiobook of book two coming soon!
I am also thrilled to announce that the prequel to The Moon and Her Sun Series, titled The Making of the Great Hawk King will be released in early February 2026.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Honestly, I was a wild child. I had little expectations of myself and was unburdened by the expectations of others.
As a woman entering her 30’s, I feel like I am clawing my way back to that unkempt child who never worried, cared little for how others viewed her, and simply wanted to create worlds while wandering the woods.
Seeking to understand my inner child has given a new depth to not only my work, but also my creative process. I am slowly allowing myself to become less rigid and more in flow with my currents of inspiration, honoring the process of creating as much as the creation itself.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I struggle deeply with the fear of being seen. This subconscious belief has held me back for most of my life, ever since I was 13 or so I would say. Where my younger childhood self cared little for the judgement of others, my older childhood and adult self has struggled to ignore the judgmental eyes of friends and strangers alike. I am affected by what others think, even if I pretend not to be.
This has held me back most in terms of marketing, I believe, as I am often hesitant and hypercritical of myself when posting on social media.
Currently, I am working to be more visible on my social media platforms, but it is a work in progress. Unfortunately, sales are often linked with our online presence, so it is something I must acknowledge and overcome to reach the next level of success I wish for my business.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes.
This correlates to the previous question, but I do not have a persona online. I post from a place of authenticity, and I think this is why I worry so much about how I am being perceived.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If immortality were real, what would you build?
This is a fun question. There are many things I would build– a giant community studio for paintings and ceramic work, a massive library filled with books from every genre, and probably a few mansion-style animal shelters.
I would also purchase as much land as possible to maintain or grow vast forests. I adore trees.
