Story & Lesson Highlights with Avian The Legend of New york City

We recently had the chance to connect with Avian The Legend and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Avian, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Pressing record and letting my feelings, emotions, and memories out on record. A 6 hour studio sessions feels like 30 minutes when I’m really killing it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is A’Vian, and I release and perform original music as Avian The Legend. I’m a singer, songwriter, and I even dance a little bit—HA! I’m a boy turned man with the same dream I’ve carried since I was 4 years old. Along the way, I’ve faced and overcome many real-life challenges that could’ve derailed that dream, but music has always been my anchor. I write and record through everything because my story isn’t just mine—it’s one that can inspire young artists to keep going. I believe art will always thrive through feelings, emotions, and memories, and that’s what I aim to capture in everything I create.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I was 8, I sang “The Christmas Song” at a holiday performance. I’d practiced endlessly with my parents, but once I got on stage, something took over—I walked the room, tipped my hat, and sang to the crowd. By the time I sat back on my stool, the audience went wild. That was the first time I felt the power of music, and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There were moments I almost gave up while making my new album “Star Complex”. It took 3–4 years to come together—I started demoing in 2021, and the last song wasn’t written until earlier this year. In between, I was constantly moving from place to place, never really having a stable foundation. That instability made it feel impossible to finish. But every time I wanted to stop, I reminded myself why I started. Once I finally found solid ground, the vision came into focus—and the album was born.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
QUALITY. Everyone knows I don’t want to do something if i can’t provide top quality especially as a progressing artist.
Also, I’ve always had a passion for this. This was not something that popped into me overnight. I have done nothing but evolve the boy that I’ve always been.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light I’ve been dimming is my full self-expression. As a Black man in the LGBTQ community chasing this dream of being a legendary artist, I’ve often felt like I had to hold back—like certain things weren’t “allowed” for me that others could freely do. But true artistry isn’t about fitting into masculinity or femininity—it’s about breaking limits. Michael did it. Prince did it. And now, it’s my turn to let that light shine.
