Story & Lesson Highlights with Carol M. Rey of Metro-Atlanta

We recently had the chance to connect with Carol M. Rey and have shared our conversation below.

Carol M. , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Right now, I am most proud of building The Elite Socialite Foundation – the official nonprofit of The Elite School of Etiquette! Our 501c3 educational nonprofit will be providing etiquette, social development and arts/cultural excursions that will provide opportunities for youth who are underserved and underrepresented in our community. It is the foundation’s inaugural year, so we are still building out our board members, partnerships and signature events; but be on the lookout, because we have some great things coming this Fall!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carol M. Rey, and I am the Founder of The Elite School of Etiquette – where we specialize in modern etiquette with timeless grace. My mission is to empower children, teens and adults with confidence, poise and social skills that extend far beyond the dining table. I am also the author of “Etiquette for the Savvy Professional” – an etiquette book designed to help working professionals strengthen their brands by developing a deeper understanding of business etiquette. I am also an educator of 26 years – which also adds to my purpose.

What sets The Elite School of Etiquette apart is that we don’t just teach rules, we teach a lifestyle of self-respect, cultural appreciation and leadership. I want readers to know that etiquette is not about being perfect or “proper”, it’s about kindness, respect, and presenting the best version of yourself to the world.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped me was the one with my mother. She instilled in me the values of dignity, discipline and compassion. Watching how she carried herself ; and constantly embodying what it means to take the high road….she set high standards for our family. Her examples have not only shaped who I am and how I see myself, but also how I teach others to show up in the world.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No – building a brand while balancing a career, motherhood, being a divorcee just gave me more drive and focus. I loved teaching and working with young people, so I realized that I had found my why as well as my purpose. I am intrinsically motivated and I have the energy like my father who is a retired entrepreneur (and also facilitates a mentoring program from young men). I realized too that I had a passion for helping others while helping them to become their best. Once I found etiquette, I never looked back; and I have been on a mission ever since. I believe that etiquette changes lives- it builds confidence, opens doors and creates leaders.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
“Etiquette is for the superior…the rich, upper class elites.”

I believe that etiquette is for everyone , not just for the wealthy, upper class . The biggest lie told about my industry is that etiquette is outdated or only about fancy table settings. In truth, etiquette is alive, evolving and needed more than ever. It’s about communication, respect, cultural awareness, and building relationships that last.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I was a woman who uplifted others through grace, wisdom, and service. That I taught generations not just how to set a table, but how to set standards for themselves. My legacy will be one of helping people walk into any room with confidence, lead with respect, and remember that their manners are truly their beauty.
