Jamya Smith shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Jamya , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My sisterhood brings me joy every time. I just enjoy their presence and it really feels like a family. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc brought people I don’t just have fun but gave me people I can talk to.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jamya Smith and I’m currently a senior in college and I have gaining experience in the business industry to become a brand manager for upcoming projects and my own startup company in the future. I’m rebranding my clothing brand “Unique” which is a representation for people who were bullied or harassed for going against society views on how we all supposed to look.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believe when I was younger that I couldn’t stand up for myself but now that I’m older my brand is proof that not only can I stand for myself but I can stand for others.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain and start using it as power in college. I started helping the community and gaining a sisterhood that believe in me. My clothing brand brought a community to stand up together.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of myself is the true me. I always believe to be myself so I can have no regrets about the choices I make in my future and for everyone to know that I’m unique and that’s okay.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes I could, because I have God and that is the only reason I need to give my all.
