Story & Lesson Highlights with Olympia Kent of Metro Atlanta

Olympia Kent shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Olympia , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now, I’m busy on set in the independent film industry—even as we do this interview. A normal day for me as Department Head of Hair and Makeup starts with preparation: reading scripts, breaking down characters, and collaborating closely with the director and costume department to bring the creative vision to life. From building looks to leading a team, every detail matters in shaping the world of a film. A normal day for me is busy in the Hair and Makeup Department—scheduling hair and makeup, keeping up with talent, and making sure each look aligns with the director’s vision. I work closely with every department and crew member to stay on time and maintain continuity. I also make sure talent is ready for their next scene, oversee my team, and step in with quick fixes or problem-solving whenever challenges arise in my department.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Olympia Kent. I’m a professional Makeup Artist, alumna of the Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Academy, and Department Head for Makeup and Hair in film, television, and editorial. I am also the owner of Makeup Goddess Studio, where I specialize in film, TV, and editorial makeup looks that not only elevate storytelling but also meet the demands of production. What sets me apart is how I blend artistry with leadership—I don’t just create the looks, I build strong, efficient glam teams that keep sets running seamlessly. Beyond the film set, I’m expanding into editorial projects, brand collaborations, and my new collective, Organization 27:17, which unites and supports artists in hair, makeup, and wardrobe at the beginning of their careers—often starting in the independent film industry.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother and mom seen it they both would support me each in their own way with my grandmother she would love for me to do her makeup and my mom would pay for any class or education that was needed to get me to that next level.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, absolutely. In the beginning, it felt like I was working nonstop without seeing results. I couldn’t imagine how the sacrifices would pay off. It took about four years before I really saw momentum and felt the work come together. There are still challenges, but now I approach them with more confidence and strategy. I understand the long game, and that keeps me moving forward.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie is that “anyone can do our job.” The truth is, film and TV makeup artistry is so much more than applying products. It requires a deep understanding of lighting, camera work, continuity, and character development—while working under intense time constraints. On top of that, department heads manage full glam teams, long production days, and the energy of the talent. Our work directly affects how an actor feels in their role and how the final project looks on screen. It takes years of training, professional products, and set etiquette to perform at this level. Passion for makeup is wonderful, but passion alone isn’t enough to thrive in this industry.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop stressing about things I can’t control. At the end of the day, life is about impact, not perfection. As the saying goes, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” — a quote often attributed to Confucius. For me, that’s exactly what being a professional Makeup Artist is—I truly love what I do.
