Conversations with the Inspiring Dominique Ramsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Ramsey.

Dominique, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Atlanta and started drawing around four years old, doodling varies Pokemon and Disney characters. As I got older, my passion for art only grew and I started drawing on anything I could get my hands on, this included the walls! After moving to Maryland 8 years ago, I had the privilege of joining the Visual Arts Program in high school which was a turning point in my career. After graduating high school, I attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for a year then transferred to SCAD where I am today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh there were many challenges! my drawing was always a conflict of interest in school and some teachers even went as far as throwing away my sketchbooks to deter me from creating, I have also had a lot of people look down on my art growing up because I enjoyed drawing mostly animals. This did not stop me though, I continued creating and drawing what I loved.

My advice for upcoming female artists is to draw what you love whether that’s animals, people, monsters, cars, fantasy etc., there is no limit to what you can accomplish. Experiment, explore, make friends, be nice, and most importantly have fun with it!

What should we know about Euqinimodart? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love illustrating animals and nature. I am best known for my bold line work, detail, and bright colors. I’m most proud that I can tell any story just by using animals and how my style can range from semi-realistic to cartoony. What sets me apart from others is how I convey messages in my art, the stories I tell, and where I take my inspiration from.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I really love the Warrior cats series by Erin Hunter, it’s what got me into reading novels as a kid and fueled my passion for drawing animals.
