Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Nicole.
Hi LaToya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began writing in the 7th grade. I started with journaling. I’ve always journaled. By the 8th grade, I was submitting poetry to every contest I could. I’ve always continued to journal throughout my life but never went any further until later in life, 2020 to be exact. I’ve experienced so much in my life and I’ve mentored and inspired so many throughout my journey. I knew I had to use that somehow to inspire people all over. I soon realized that writing would be the outlet.
My love for writing and my gift with wordplay has always been one of my favorite past times. I signed up for a class with other writers to hold myself accountable for not getting distracted. For six weeks, I made this my priority and I did it. It was hard. A lot of the chapters, I had to write through tears, happy and sad tears. Some were tears of gratefulness. I’ve come a long way. If you knew where I was, you’d be in awe to know who I am NOW. So, to fulfill my assignment to this world, I wrote a brief and detailed short version of my story and formed it into an inspiring, motivating, and soul-moving self-help guide to creating a new storyline for your life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I faced was fear of judgment. Many who know me don’t know the old me. I was never one to fear being transparent. I’m a helper and a teacher at heart so that comes easy to me. I feared the backlash for being so transparent. But for me, transparency is freedom. I hope that makes sense. I added and took away a lot of material to make sure the message came out the right way. With all the trauma I experienced and caused, I had to be careful with how the story flowed.
The goal wasn’t for it to be a sob story. I wanted it to trigger people to heal and show them how to do it. I wanted to inspire change. Another obstacle was learning the ropes of turning your book into your business. It turned out; this journey is what I’ve been missing all along. I could write all day; about anything. Lastly, I would say focusing. Being a hard worker like myself (I have a job, twin toddlers, and five side gigs), it was extremely hard to sit down and focus. Many parts of my book were spoken into a mic while on the go. It all turned out great, though. I’m published!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a practice coordinator for a hospital. I also coordinate recruitment there. I’m a licensed cosmetologist. I have a press-on nail line. I clean houses. I deliver food, and I’m in training to obtain my life insurance license in two different states. I’m a pretty busy woman.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned from the Covid-19 crisis to always have additional sources of income. I’ve also learned to cherish your loved ones more than ever. Money comes and goes; actually, almost everything comes and goes. The only thing you can’t get back is time. Make lots of memories, spend lots of time.
