Exploring Life & Business with Toquetta Christian of Salon SHEARiousity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toquetta Christian.

Hi Toquetta, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I discovered my love for hair during my weekend sleepovers at my friend’s house. We were always doing something, dealing with makeup and hair. I started out braiding. My friends let me creative, I really appreciate them for that. So I remember about the age of 13, telling my mom I want to do hair. Her words, “they make a lot of money, but don’t have any benefits.” Lol. Although I didn’t understand what that meant then, Little did I know what was to come. She’s been supportive from day 1.

By the time I reached High school, I pretty much became the go-to in my school and the area for cornrows, braids and updos. I had my grandmother’s living room lit! I became so busy, she told me I had to start traveling to my clients, “it’s too many people coming in and out of my house”. My grandmother was my backbone and definitely a big part of my solid foundation.

I went to cosmetology school directly after of high school. I remember doing a walk-through during my orientation and it was this girl Marcel curling this lady‘s short hair. I absolutely fell in love. It was that very moment my spark and love for short hair began.

From there, I assisted an awesome Stylist, shout out to Mechelle. Not realizing that job position would lead me to lifelong relationships and opportunities. That salon was very very pivotal in my career. I met so many great people. That loved on me, stretched me, honed my skills and took me under their wing.

My assistant experience was so so necessary. It leads me here. From renting a booth. Leasing a Suite. And recently opening my second storefront salon space.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I struggled with being OK with letting go of people that were no longer serving me because I’m forever a servant. I had to learn to be OK and understand that everyone can’t and will not go with you along your journey as you climb.

Also, not having a solid team. I had to learn Working together/ networking is way more productive than working alone.

when it comes to single parenting and entrepreneurship. that’s something I’m still discovering and working on along the way. There’s no manual for that. Just Persistence. Perseverance. And Prayer.

It’s important that black salons are seen in a more positive light. Starting with my own. That’s my goal.
