For Vanessa Chinopoulou-McCoy, food is about more than flavor — it’s about sharing culture, hospitality, and connection. Through Nostimo Texas, she’s introducing Americans to authentic Greek Fruit Spoon Sweets, a centuries-old tradition rooted in welcoming guests and celebrating real fruit. By honoring heritage while offering handcrafted options for modern lifestyles, Vanessa is preserving a beloved piece of Greek culture and inviting people to create new traditions of their own, one spoonful at a time.
Vanessa, you’re introducing American consumers to the centuries-old tradition of authentic Greek Fruit Spoon Sweets through Nostimo Texas, blending heritage with modern, health-conscious options. What inspired you to bring this unique part of Greek culture to the U.S., and why do you believe now is the right time for more people to discover it?
Growing up in Greece, Fruit Spoon Sweets were just a part of life. If someone stopped by your home, they were welcomed with a glass of cold water and a spoon sweet. It was such a simple gesture, but it meant, “We’re happy you’re here.” When I moved to the U.S., I realized almost no one had heard of them, and I wanted to change that.
I also think people today are looking for foods with a story. They want real ingredients, authentic traditions, and products that connect them to different cultures. Greek Fruit Spoon Sweets check all those boxes. They’re naturally versatile, unprocessed, made with fruit, and rooted in generations of family tradition. It feels like the perfect time to introduce people to something that’s been loved in Greece for centuries.
For readers who have never heard of Greek Fruit Spoon Sweets, what are they, and how do they differ from traditional jams, preserves, or fruit spreads?
The biggest difference is that Fruit Spoon Sweets celebrate the fruit instead of turning it into a spread. The fruit stays whole or in large pieces, so you can really appreciate its texture and flavor.
In Greece, we enjoy them with Greek yogurt, ice cream, cheese, pastries, or simply on their own with coffee or a glass of cold water. They can even be used in cocktails and desserts. They’re much lighter than people expect and really let the fruit shine.
Nostimo Texas offers vegan, gluten-free, handcrafted, and no-sugar-added varieties. How have you stayed true to authentic Greek traditions while adapting to the preferences of today’s consumers?
We’ve never wanted to change the tradition—we just wanted to make it accessible to more people. The recipes still focus on fruit first, and everything is handcrafted in small batches. We simply offer options that fit different lifestyles, whether that’s vegan, gluten-free, or no-sugar-added.
For us, authenticity isn’t about refusing to evolve. It’s about respecting the tradition while making sure more people can enjoy it. We think that’s exactly how food traditions stay alive.
In Greece, Fruit Spoon Sweets are closely tied to hospitality and welcoming guests. Why is that cultural tradition so meaningful to you, and how do you hope sharing it helps people connect through food?
Hospitality is such a big part of Greek culture. Growing up, it didn’t matter if someone planned to visit or just showed up unexpectedly—there was always something to offer them. Fruit Spoon Sweets were never just dessert; they were a way of making someone feel welcome.
I hope people who try our products don’t just enjoy the flavor. I hope they create their own traditions, whether that’s serving them when friends come over, sharing them with family, or bringing them to a gathering. Food has an amazing way of bringing people together, and I love that we’re sharing a tradition that’s all about generosity and connection.
As you continue introducing this Mediterranean specialty to American tables, what are your hopes for Nostimo Texas, and what would you love people to experience the very first time they taste an authentic Greek Fruit Spoon Sweet?
My biggest hope is that Fruit Spoon Sweets become something people recognize and get excited about, just like baklava or Greek yogurt. There are so many wonderful Greek foods beyond the ones everyone already knows, and I’d love for this to become one of them.
The first thing I want people to experience is surprise. Most people expect something that’s overly sweet like jam, but instead they taste real organic fruit, beautiful texture, and something completely different. Then I hope they become curious—not just about the product, but about the tradition behind it. If one spoonful inspires someone to learn a little more about Greece, share it with someone they love, or create a new family tradition, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to do.
