Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Godwin.
Daisy came from Taiwan where she taught Hindu classical dance at a university. After immigrating to the U.S., she and her husband Julian ran a bookstore, and later became a digital graphic designer.
She was influenced by her antique & bookseller husband to study vintage costume jewelry, and became fascinated with the styles, craftsmanship, and stories behind each piece. With her art savvy and multi-cultural background, it was a natural next step to launch her jewelry business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have been selling pieces from our collection through online stores and local antique malls since 2007. Our many clients include celebrities and repeat customers. Also, we have rented our jewelry to movie productions and loaned to fashion magazines for their photo sections.
Once, the online business enabled us to reach a worldwide audience and kept us very busy packing, shipping and updating listings. Since all our stock is one-of-a-kind creations or hard-to-find vintage pieces, the online business grew overwhelming. Because each item we offer is unique, effective online marketing was difficult with so many mass producers as competition.
We now limit the online business so Daisy can find time for creativity, and enabling us to expend more care and attention to our local stores at Antiques & Beyond.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nouveau Boutique – what should we know?
Atlanta based Nouveau Boutique sells our original semi-precious stone creations, sterling silver jewelry, and collectible vintage costume jewelry plus fashion accessories including hats, purses and perfume bottles.
We are a Mom and Pop business. Daisy wears many different hats at Nouveau Boutique as Founder, Designer, Buyer, Photographer, while Julian takes care of packing and shipping. Their talented artist daughter Julie Godwin created an illustration for…N B that has become our emblem… Her cat Milo has been Daisy’s special assistant, staying with her no matter how late she worked and sometimes serving as Nouveau Boutique’s model.
Where we go and where we buy! Daisy carefully hand-picks the treasures. She cleans and polishes vintage jewelry with loving attention. Our showcase includes many signed or otherwise attributed designer vintage costume jewelry including Miriam Haskell, Eisenberg Original, Delizza & Elster’s Juliana and more. For her original creations she prefers sterling and gold-filled components to complement the beauty and value of high quality semi-precious stones.
