Meet Mar’Kayla Bethea of Nita’s Hands Personalized Gifts in East Side

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mar’Kayla Bethea.

Mar’Kayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always made gifts for my family and friends for free but decided to put a name to my talent just last year. Nita’s Hands Crafts & More was birthed April 8, 2019, but the business officially launched on September 30, 2019. The name “Nita’s Hands” is in honor of my late grandmother, Juanita Smith, who was known for her creativity through her crafts. I started making customized mason jars out of my apartment just to make a little extra cash before I had finished school with my Master’s degree. On February 2, 2020, my business was rebranded to Nita’s Hands Personalized Gifts to offer a better representation of my services. Since launching Nita’s Hands, my business has grown by specializing in customization for any occasion with over a hundred items to choose from. Now I am creating and designing t-shirts, wine glasses, gift baskets, mugs, crossing gifts, and more by hand every day!

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it was not smooth in the beginning. I was a vendor for the first time in February 2020 and I only sold two items! After all the time and money I spent, I had to reflect on what could change. I decided to rebrand my business and work on my marketing skills. At first, no one was buying anything from me and I was finding myself giving discounts or giving out free gifts for exchange for them to promote my products. I had to pray and remain patient because I knew my talent had a lot of worth and eventually, my business started to pop off.

My business helps put that personal touch on gifts for any occasion. I specialize in custom t-shirts, wine glasses, mugs, crossing gifts, care packages/gift baskets, wreaths, and so much more. I am known for my creative designs and being able to bring my customer’s vision to life. I am most proud of how much my business has gained attention and the way people trust me with their vision. I believe what sets me apart is that I am a perfectionist and I am willing to spend hours making sure that what I am producing is something that I would be satisfied with if the roles were switched. Also, what sets me apart is I do all my designs for my custom t-shirts and other items by hand with no template.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Atlanta is a perfect place for my business and I would definitely recommend starting out here. Atlanta has a lot of opportunities and the people in this city love to spend their money! My business actually picked up for me once I had moved back to Atlanta from being in Huntsville, Alabama, for school.
