Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Causey.
Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Justin Causey-Bullock, but everyone just calls me Causey. I started managing artists about 5/6 years ago. After college, my friend group was full of different musically inclined people because I marched for Tennessee State University. I use to host spoken word events and cyphers and one of my coworkers/homies from Nike told me that he had a younger brother who rapped. We put on a festival together, and his younger brother (The Blackson) later that night asked me to be his manager. Over the years, it’s been trial and error and just growing with experience. Just from being passionate about the music and having faith, it’s lead me to working with great artists (my friends) and being able to design sneakers with Nike, awarded by my university, and making a name for myself within this creative space.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely been a roller coaster of emotions and experiences but it’s all been worth it. There was a period where I was walking to work, and riding my skateboard just to get enough money to save up for bills and buy a car, then when I got the car, I ended up sleeping in for a few weeks, then got into a car accident in Atlanta, I lost the car and almost lost my life, but was able to wake up, have successful surgeries, and then did my own physical therapy. A second choice at life, ya feel me. My Kanye moment, haha.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the operations manager for BlackCity Recording, and I handle the day-to-day operations for a roster of artists. I help them with project management, organization, and creative execution of their ideas. I also do creative branding and direction for brands within the city, and I am a footwear designer, that has worked with Nike. I guess I’m known for just being a good person, a solid person who will always pull up and pull through for you. What sets me apart from others is just me. My individuality and my story is just that, it’s me and it’s no one else’s. I’m most proud of just the fact I’m still here and I can do the things I love with my friends.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see it adapting with the times. I see the creative industry continue to flourish, and companies see the power and art that we offer. Creatives know how to tell stories that connect with people and allow you to feel the emotion through their work. I think music will only get better, and it’s reach will only go further. These major companies will begin to see that they need creatives to help them grow with their consumers.
