Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Attakorah Band: The Blues Reincarnation Project.
Jeffrey Attakorah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana in West Africa. Around the age of 12 yrs and 10 month, i move to the USA. Stayed in Maryland for a couple of months and then moved to Delaware, where my music journey started. I got in to guitar after seeing ‘Jonas’ a show with the Jonas Brothers on Disney Channel. I got a chance to start taking music classes at Glasgow High School where after a school year of guitar class, i got into Jazz Band, Steel band, Chorus class and later Canterbury Chorus.
It was around that time when i ‘graduated’ from Disney channel phase, met a friend Tony Santi, who gave my my first electric guitar, an Epiphone Les Paul and introduced me to Classic Rock and Rock, from Hendrix to many more. Spending more time with Jazz and Steel band, i got into the Blues and met Charlie Greaves met and became friends. Greaves invited Attakorah to check out his band, Checkered Heroes perform, that’s where I met Ryan Gorman.
After i graduated from high School, got even more into Blues and started performing as a solo guitarist, where i’d loop chords and play melodies and solos over. Around March 2016, I needed a band from others recommending and i got back with Greaves and Gorman, and we became ‘The Blues Reincarnation Project’, which is now my main project. Greaves on drums, Gorman on bass and myself on guitar, formed a blues-rock, British blues, and new age blues influenced band from the Newark, Delaware area. Our goal was to bring the Blues Back to the younger generation.
After a couple of years together, Gorman resigned from his post, and while searching for a full-time bassist, Isaac Moore, a local bassist stepped in as their interim bassist. Then arrived, Dylan Walker, a new up and coming bassist from the New Castle, Delaware scene, well versed in classic rock and traditional blues genres.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I see myself as a sponge. I am very influences by lots of genres, my culture and people. But at the core of that is Blues centered/influenced music. I play at in different African Churches where i get to play some High Life, Soukous and other forms of African music. Also in a couple of other projects, one with a singer, Nic Snow and another one with a Saxophonist, Khari Hayden called Rooted Loopes where we just play instrumental music as well as the Blues Reincarnation Project. I say this to explain that i draw from a lot of different genres and styles, from Funk, Soul, RnB, Blues Rock, Classic Rock and more, but at the core is Blues Music.
In September 2017, My band, The Blues Reincarnation Project, released a record called “A Hint of Blues”, a nine-track album filled with originals of many genres. From a Slow and traditional blues to funk and acoustic ballad, with interludes introducing the band to the world. I wrote all the songs from my own personal experience and with the help of the band, we were able to bring it to life.
Ultimately, my goal along with the band’s, is we just want people to know the Blues still exist, young people still are playing instrumentals and with bands like this, the future of the Blues and Great music is in good hands.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Take your time, enjoy the process and enjoy each other’s company. From the company of other artists you meet, your fans, and most importantly, your band mates. More than often you work so hard just to get a little time on the stage, which is great when you do. We, especially young people, rush the process, from song writing to recording, and try to take short cuts just to get out there. But making sure you enjoy the process of writing, truly being honest with yourself about the persona and ideas you are evoking as an artist, and having fun is all a group or artist can ask for. Because when the gig is over, what do you have? The memories and emotions people share together during the event. So why not enjoy it while it last?
