Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Christor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Imani. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m an Atlanta based, Northern California native, with a B.A. in Studio Art. I contribute to the diversity of characters in media by illustrating children I believe are present but rarely represented. As a home-schooled child from second grade to my senior year of high school, my mother tried her hardest to find forms of media featuring protagonists of color. Unfortunately, it was more difficult than expected. So as a teenager and young adult, I made it my focus to create content that featured black protagonists.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve had several challenges since starting my art career. It’s been more of my figuring out my focus as well as the medium in which I’d like to proceed. I’ve had experiences where my medium was questioned as an illustrator. I’ve also had experiences where I received great advice as someone that mainly did digital work. It allowed me to pick and choose what information I found helpful and acknowledge that the other information, although great, was not applicable to me.
I’ve also experienced life as a struggling artist where I was unable to sustain myself through my artwork and had to get a full-time job to make a living wage, thus placing my artwork on hold. But I know that everyone’s journey is unique and am doing my best to work towards a successful and profitable future.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ImaniJC – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company/artist name is ImaniJC. My focus is to produce illustrative and animated works that feature protagonists of color. I’m mostly known for the children I draw around the ages of 5 to 12, an impressionable age where there’s a direct focus on representation in media. My mediums range from digital illustrations to acrylic paintings.
One of my proudest moments was in October 2018, where I completed a mural for Elevate ATL. Several people stopped me and applauded my focus on children of color, and even compared the image to their children. It confirmed my passion.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like most about the city are the opportunities for new artists and the ability to reach my desired demographic. Something I had to learn since being here is that networking is necessary to being successful in the city. I know how to network, but as an introvert, it’s a tad difficult.
