Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a young lady, I was raised by my grandparents within a loving and supportive community in Memphis, TN. I was taught the values of being a responsible citizen and having empathy for others. My life thus far has been a validation of the “Six Degree of Separation” concept.
I firmly believe that within this circle are the perfect persons to benefit from mutual support during this journey. I am blessed and honored to have been a leader in a Fortune 100 company for over 28 years. My previous employer also emphasized being a responsible community partner and received national recognition for supporting small businesses as well as businesses owned by women of color. I’ve always had that “entrepreneurial spirit”, but I also desired to make a meaningful contribution that goes beyond money and status. Confident in my upbringing and management repertoire layered on the foundation of integrity, judgment and customer loyalty – I followed my heart and created Ginger Yum, LLC.
Has it been a smooth road?
There was a great deal of preparation and sacrifices prior to my early retirement from the corporate world. I took classes through Small Business Association while living in Atlanta, GA. The SBA is a great source to prepare you for entrepreneurship. While most classes are free, you have to expect some cost. Further you must be honest with yourself and committed to your journey. It is important to be introspective and passionate about running a successful business. Lastly, check with your local library and Chamber of Commerce for small business offerings as well.
Marketing is key especially for online business and that is the area for opportunity. From a business standpoint, be sure to have a well thought out marketing plan that includes a reasonable budget that will reach your targeted audience. Invest in an electronic bookkeeping program such as QuickBooks to aid in running the business. Electronic bookkeeping is a great resource to put in place in the beginning of starting your business. The ultimate challenge of having your own business is being able to get past the first year trending upward.
