Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua “Showtime” Williams.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I come from a musical family, and I have been singing all my life. I first began singing in the church, and as I continued to get older my passion for music continued to grow as well. Growing up I always had the dream of either playing in the NBA or becoming a “singing superstar.” Soon, instead of only singing at church, I began to sing outside of church at community talent shows school events and things of that nature. However, it wasn’t until I was in the middle of my graduate degree program, that I made the decision that I truly wanted to chase the dream. I always did the things I thought I was “supposed” to be doing like going to school, getting my degrees and securing a decent job. It was in 2014 when I first became a professional singer. I was working at Florida State University at the time, and some opportunities presented themselves, and I took full advantage of them. In May 2017 I left my job at FSU, and I have been a full-time artist and musician ever since. I also describe my journey as a Beautiful Struggle. It has its highs and lows but the process has been rewarding, and there is nothing else I’d rather be doing.
Please tell us about your art.
I am an R&B artist, and I make music that is authentic and real. I create relatable music that evokes some type of emotional response in the listener. My goal is to make people truly feel the words that I’m singing. I felt that R&B was getting oversaturated with the message of sex, and I wanted to create my songs that would put Love back into our music. I think that’s an aspect that is missing from music today. My first EP that I released in 2016 is titled “More Than Just Words,” and it centered around the theme that “I love you” is so much more than just three words. There’s meaning and expectation that comes with saying those words in different contexts. I pull inspiration from everywhere ranging from my personal experiences to the lives of those around me. I’m always observing.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
REACH OUT!! The best advice I can give is simply to reach out. You might get a response. You might not. However, we can’t build with each other if we don’t speak to each other. Personally, I love collaborating and meeting other artists. Through this, we can learn from each other, or even create something new possible. So reach out and talk to other artists!
