Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ganielle E. Hooper.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Atlanta the summer of 2017 and it was recommended that I open a Mental Health private practice once I was settled. It was recommended by my former employer because he saw the connection I made with my patients. I secured a location at the end of 2017 and saw my first patient in February 2018. Currently, I have 60 patients and plan to expand this year. I will hire a therapist within the next six months and a second provider by the end of this year. My ultimate goal is to open a second practice that will provide primary care in addition to mental health treatment, in the same clinic. I plan to offer a one-stop-shop for patients that will provide mental health treatment, evaluations, therapy, and primary care.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road and I have struggled since the beginning. Securing a supervising physician was difficult in addition to the continued financial challenges. Typically, the Nurse Practitioners work directly with the physician and many did not understand the concept of supervision with my own, separate practice. Also, I did not take out any loans or borrow any money so all funding was secured by myself and my spouse. The obstacles I faced, forced me to clearly define my purpose and to answer my “why”. I understood the reward at the end of my journey and this allowed me to continue.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Axis Hope – what should we know?
Axis Hope provides mental health treatment to Pediatric patients, 21 years old younger. We assess, diagnose, and treat concerns including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, and behavior concerns. I am most proud that we are closing the gap between access and treatment. We are impacting the community and making a difference in individuals, families, and society. We are different from others by offering late hours during the week until 7pm and open on Saturdays. We understand the importance of school and wish to accommodate children’s schedule.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a very kind person, approachable, and I listen to patient needs. I have extended appointment times so patients do not feel rushed and I provide a safe, relaxing environment that is free from judgment.
