Life and Work with Carolina Sena Sbresso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Sena Sbresso.

Carolina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came to the United States in September of 2000. I’m from Uruguay, and I have worked in so many different places, babysitting, cleaning houses, etc. It was five years ago when I decided to have my own business, so I went back to school, finished my GED, and enrolled in Real Estate School. I was working, so I had to take evening classes, and then going home and be a wife and a mom. I quit my job but after a couple of months, I had to go back and do Real Estate part-time because I was a brand new agent and I had to get the people to know me, income is commission based so it was hard at first. After a couple of years, I quit my job definitely, and I do Real Estate full time, thinking of doing my Broker License, and also in getting the license in Florida and South Carolina. I also do insurance, and my number one goal is to help women, victims of domestic violence, as a Survivor, I want to inspire and motivate all those women that are going through the same situation I’ve been.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you start your own business, there will always be struggles. You are going to be new, so people need to know you, what you do. If it is based in commission think about having some savings to survive the first months. For me, it was hard the first times because my sphere of influence was pretty small, so I had to go to Networking events, do a lot of social media, I had to learn how to be more confident and talk to people. I have to confess that I had a couple of times where I doubted and I wanted to just quit and go back to my 9-5 job, but fortunately, I didn’t do it, and even though I’m not where I want to be, I’m positive that I’m on the correct way. So, for those women thinking in open their own business, I will say that; it’s hard yes but it’s worth it. Be patient and don’t lose hope, focus on your goal and you will get there.

Please tell us about your work.
What I love about my job is that I help people, families to find their dream home. Even if they are buying or selling their house, and buy another one, I help them with the process. I really focus on what my client needs, what they want, because a house is the biggest investment they will have, is where they and their family are going to live, where they will make good memories, so I do my best to explain and advise them during the whole process.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think it is very important to have a mentor. A person that will not only teach you but hold you accountable. Also, going to networking events, and get to know people. If you give a good service, people will refer you to their family and friends. Remember that people want to do business with people they like. Always be yourself and people will like you.
