Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Spaceman.
Sarah, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m from a very small town in south Georiga and being a giant nerd; I got bullied a lot. My mom used to tell me those girls would never leave town, and I’d get to do great things, and she was right. Now I’m a Georgia Southern graduate, I’ve worked in India and been to Italy. I work as a motion graphics designer near downtown Atlanta, and with over 85 thousand followers on Instagram, my costumes have been seen by people all over the world.
Those bullies never left town.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Well I’m a cosplayer, and I came to the world of cosplay the same way most people do, I really love anime, video games, etc. I started back in 2011 but didn’t start making my own costumes and competing until 2013-2014. It wasn’t until just last year that any of that competing ever led to a win, but I took home best in show at Momocon 2018 for my Pink Diamond cosplay. After years of walking away crying with not even an honorable mention. With nearly 1000 pearls and two wigs worth of hair It was the most technically impressive costume I’ve ever made, and the pinkest.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
For me personally, it’s time. I have a 40 hour work week at my job, but I usually go home every day and start sewing after dinner. I do that pretty much, but I still feel like there are so many more projects I could do if there were a few more hours in the day.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I’m Sarahspaceman on everything, but my biggest and main platform Is Instagram. Though I have a Youtube, a Tiktok, and a Facebook page too. I also have an Etsy where I sell sewing and armor patterns.
