Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Torres.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for creating something tactile – whether it be a physical object or something 2d. Growing up in South Florida, my parents always encouraged me to express my creativity and you could often find me doodling and immersing myself in paintings and crafts, but unfortunately, it wasn’t easy to find art classes outside of school so during summer vacations, my parents would usually send me to visit family in Colombia and I would explore different art courses there with my cousins. I believe this is where my family saw how much I appreciated the craft and would encourage me to further skills in that area. Fast forward to high school, I realized I could pursue a career as an Artist through the means of becoming an Illustrator and I’d get to span different markets with my skills. I enrolled at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA and earned my BFA, of course, along the way, I met some amazingly talented individuals and am currently pursuing an MFA in Motion Media Design, where I’ve been able to integrate my skills as an Illustrator to the world of Animation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think every journey has its hiccups, but the outcome has been positive up until now! There have always been some internal struggles when it comes to bettering my work, reaching that learning curve, or even making sure you’re taking care of yourself amidst the chaos of day to day deadlines. Through it all, I’ve been able to make it this far thanks to my family and those friends that encourage me and keep me sane! The most important advice I would stress to anyone wanting to follow in the same path is to keep your goals in mind and not to lose sight of what it is you want; with that in mind, goals may change, I think its only natural, but keeping true to yourself and being able to be proud of what it is you’ve accomplished should always be kept in mind.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am currently pursuing a Masters in Motion Media Design, and have been freelancing as an Illustrator. I specialize in creating work geared towards children. My work differs depending on each project, but have been creating more digital work lately, still using my traditional skills in order to create textures for various works. I tend to have very whimsical work, leaning on my knowledge of color to help elevate each piece!
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I definitely try to use anything that’s at my disposal! In work and life, I always try to draw from previous experiences or artists in order to translate my ideas or actions better. To me, it’s definitely important to keep irradiate positivity and good workflows in order to have the best outcomes possible.
