Today we’d like to introduce you to Flwr Chyld.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Flwr Chyld. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As the son of a band director who got his start in Dekalb County (which was a powerhouse for marching bands), I’d say that my chosen path to create music was inevitable. Long late night car rides listening to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Pharrell, A Tribe Called Quest, and Dwele…pretty much sum up the start. I knew I loved that type of music (which was jazz and neo soul) but couldn’t describe what or how it made me feel as an adolescent.
Somehow I knew it made me feel good…Outside of being a kid, it gave me this sense of easiness to life. I started playing trombone in 6th grade (I’m 22 now), and always knew I wanted to do something in art, but stumbling across the infamous FL Studio demo when I was 14 put the icing on the cake for me. My dad bought me the full program and before you knew it here, I am. I ended up earning a music scholarship to attend the Georgia State University School of Music where I added keyboard into my creative palette.
Throughout my time in college, I played in the GSU Jazz Ensemble where I met the members of my band as well as the collective I create with now. Spending time creating in my dorm gave me an opportunity to really hone in on my sound as a producer/songwriter, and soon after I found myself working with ATL based artists Yung Baby Tate, Nai Br.XX, Grimm Lynn, and James Bambu. This would eventually elevate to me traveling to NYC to work with artists Devin Tracy and James Tillman. Thus far its been an amazing ride working with a roster of super dope artists and doing a ton of shows in 2018 that included a mini-tour. All in all, I’m blessed.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any creative endeavor, one chooses to explore, it definitely comes with its challenges. I’ve been in a number of scenarios where I’ve been given the short end of the stick and felt like I was snubbed out of certain opportunities…Its been a long list of things from miscommunication, being taken advantage of, and also knowing what is and isn’t for you. It’s a game of give and take where you have to trust what you’re doing and understand that you have to take several risks before seeing success. Trust me, it can take a toll on you emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and in some cases physically. But I think finding balance is the difference maker when you’re chasing your dreams. It’s a matter of building your tolerance to things that don’t go your way (PATIENCE haha), as well as making sure you stay consistent and persistent with what you’re doing no matter the circumstances.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a producer/songwriter I like to separate myself from the rest of the pack by creating my own content…and by that, I mean reaching out to artists I personally want to work with and not becoming victim to the traditional standard of the industry which is making money or becoming successful through placements. Within my creative process, I like to approach it with the intent of just creating good ass music with other artists or writers who I think could make it come to life.
As far as shows are concerned I like to create an experience for my audience which entails live drum programming with me as the keyboardist, my guitar player (Alex Hassell), and bass player (Pluto Shane). I’m all about making sure whoever is in the room remembers how that particular performance made them feel for a lifetime and will want to experience those vibes again in the future.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
ORIGINALITY! I always ask myself how can you create something that no one has ever heard or seen. What is the language within the music and what emotional message are you trying to convey within the music? People want something that they can relate to of course, but what are you saying within that through chords or lyrics that will leave people wanting more. Then the final component of that is snatching edges and making people make the stank face when they hear my music…I love it every time I see that scrunched up face at my shows, that lets me know this is exactly what I need to be doing, haha.
