Today we’d like to introduce you to Akkissia Slay.
Akkissia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
So I came into college (Fort Valley State University) thinking that I wanted to be a physical therapist because my ultimate goal is to help people. That’s what feeds me. But that changed when I realized physical therapy was so surface level and I wanted something deeper. I graduated with a psychology degree and recently acquired my Master’s in psychology as well. I’ve learned from school and from life that sometimes a simple conversation from a stranger can make a world of difference in your life. And my channel will be that platform for conversation with a little entertainment.
Originally, I started my channel back in 2011 when I was 18 years old. I posted a video of my sister sneezing with her eyes open and the video went viral only a year ago reaching millions of views on all social media platforms. I rebranded my channel and dropped my first personal video Jan.1, 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not as smooth as it sounds previously. I attempted to rebrand in October of 2018, and because of lack of confidence, lack of motivation and the fear of failing… I didn’t proceed with dropping new content. I was anxious about how people would receive me being so vulnerable.
KissiaDee The Channel – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
KissiaDee The Channel is more than a YouTube channel to me, but a platform and voice. I graduated with my Master’s in Psychology in May, and talking to people is honestly what I feel I was called by God to do. My channel helps me with being vulnerable and helping reach a larger audience than I ever imagined. I currently have a little over 30,000 subscribers and this is only the beginning for me. I don’t use scripts when I record, and it always has to feel natural for me. I don’t just have candles and sage burning every time I record for the aesthetics, but for the energy. I’m proud of myself for stepping out on faith. If my channel can help one person out the 30,000 people subscribed to me, that’s what matters.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not a destination. But a journey. I don’t believe in getting comfortable. Success should be something that you are continuing to strive for throughout your entire life. Reaching small goals as well as the unreachable, and the journey of trying to reach them makes me feel successful.
