Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandice Burts.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kandice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey started over ten years ago when I took part in my first birth. I know that I enjoyed children and what better way to be there for them then to assist their mom with her birth. I think the fire really started when I became pregnant with my first child and was trying to find a way to experience a normal birth. We started out just as most families do, going to your OBGYN waiting an hour or so to be seen only to spend 15min with the doctor. I felt like I was a number being cycled through a failed system. At that point, my husband and I begin our research. We found a birth center, a midwife and delivered naturally outside of a “hospitalized” system. And with that Blessed Queens was born. I then desired to help other families know their options and do my best to find ways to assist them on their journey. “Helping moms feel like the Queen that you are!”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The overall journey has been great. The downfall is that so many women who need the services I offer, tend to shy away from them or are still unaware of who doulas are and what we do. Women are dying at astounding rates daily, black women to be more specific, so we NEED this. And as much as I would love to help every mom I encounter who’s pregnant, I have a family at home as well, so I have to stay business minded too. The hardest part of being a doula is valuing yourself as a businesswoman and wanting to help others. I am truly blessed that I have been able to assist families that value me and what I do. Every mother deserves a doula and should birth with a doula, especially if you are a woman of color!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blessed Queens Doula Care – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is Blessed Queens Doula Care. We are a birth and postpartum care service that assist families from conception, through prenatal care, birth and the postpartum period. I am a certified Life Coach, Birth & Postpartum Doula, Child Birth Educator, Placenta Encapsulate Specialist, Belly Binding Specialist and assist with womb care. All of the things needed to educate and relate to new families is what we offer. I have recently started a collective that assist newer doulas with getting started on their doulaing journey! I pride myself on giving families the royal treatment, hence the names of the company and my packages. My families walk away from their birth experience well prepared and educated, sort of like the red carpet is being rolled out for them.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to support more families and ultimately get to a point where I am training more people to become doulas! I enjoy educating others and seeing that this is a great need, I plan to assist others with coming along on this journey! Now if we’re talking future plans, I ultimately want to become a midwife to better serve my community, but for now, I’m enjoying my babies and assisting families with their babies!
