Today we’d like to introduce you to Farren Hoskins.
Farren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After finishing school (with degrees in kinesiology and health and mass comm), I wanted to create a fun space for women (and men) to feel inspired and more so encouraged to lead a healthier lifestyle, mainly by changing their diet, especially when they are faced with managing chronic ailments. I suffered for years in silence with chronic pain within my reproductive system and numerous doctor’s visits. My prescriptions would hardly work, and I was never provided with any answers as to why I kept experiencing issues. Internally, I felt so isolated because everyone around me seemed perfectly healthy and normal, and I knew of no other women with similar stories. But after years of research, I realized there were plenty of women with my issues – they had just been quietly suffering as well.
I felt compelled to share my story and my road to healing by way of altering my eating habits and making other lifestyle changes through Phresh Wishes. That’s why Phresh Wishes is heavily food-based. I want women or anyone trying to manage a chronic condition that medical providers don’t seem to have solutions for to know they are not alone! And the food they consume could be the remedy to set them free.
Now, Phresh Wishes is a blog dedicated to anyone looking for healthy recipe ideas, fitness inspiration, and life tips! We’re even working with major brands as of this year!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, the struggle has been real! lol. Aside from all of the trial and error, months of no growth and failures, the biggest obstacle came when I became pregnant nine months after I started Phresh Wishes. Six weeks into my pregnancy, I started to become violently ill (vomiting day and night, incessant nausea, extreme fatigue, headaches, etc.). And I was extremely food averse. The sight, smell and thought of most food was enough to make me shed tears while gagging. That doesn’t work out well when you’re running a blog about food and exercise. So, Phresh Wishes died for about a year. It wasn’t until a dear, a sweet friend pushed me to pick it back up again that I decided Phresh Wishes needed to be revived.
Phresh Wishes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Phresh Wishes is a health and wellness blog offering an approachable guide to living healthier. And although I use lots of humor, I take the element of “approach” very seriously. When I started Phresh Wishes, I would come across all of these cool and beautiful food blogs, but these weren’t recipes you could whip up on a whim. They would always seem to require a trip to Whole Foods for 17 ingredients and even more steps. I love that Phresh Wishes makes healthy eating actually EASY, doable and tasty. I’m very transparent about what I eat, the days I fall short, how I recover, etc. It’s very relatable. I don’t put myself on some health god pedestal. I encourage healthy eating habits and working out, but I also emphasize balance and not depriving yourself (especially for us mommas!).
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I felt like all I had been working towards was finally manifesting when the first major brand (Kroger) reached out to me for a paid opportunity. I was almost in disbelief because Phresh Wishes is still so small and I had gone so long without recognition or knowing any company saw value in my brand. But, honestly, I’m even more proud and fulfilled when someone reaches out to me to say they decided to work out because of me or they’re changing their diet because of one of my posts. That’s purpose. That’s affirmation. That’s why I created Phresh Wishes.
