Today we’d like to introduce you to Je’nell Hubbard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began making jewelry around the age of nine. I picked up the hobby from a couple of my aunts. Even though they had moved on from the jewelry making phase, I stuck with it! My mom instantly supported me as soon as I expressed my interest. I soon began selling jewelry sets in a shoebox at local hair salons and to teachers at my mom’s school.
Fast forward, I went to college and I took a break for a couple of years. I lost my desire to continue with the craft. Nevertheless, I came back making jewelry with a newly ignited passion! I began making more bracelets and switched my direction. Then was where I searched and dug for a business name. After weeks of thoughts and brainstorming, I came up with the perfect name, Kelley Beads! Many customers think that Kelley is my actual name. However, because of the influence, my mom has had on me and my business, I wanted to give back a piece of my business to her to simply show appreciation. Her maiden last name is Kelley which is why I named my business Kelley Beads.
Even though making jewelry is still a hobby of mine, I hold my business near and dear. Each customer I have and will come across will have a piece of my talent. It means a lot that there are some willing to support me and those that TRULY love my work. That keeps me going! This business at times is so much bigger than me and I am genuinely grateful that I was blessed with this talent to touch hundreds with my work.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, no road worth traveling is a smooth path. I did struggle at times reconnecting with my artistic talents only because at times you run across some that don’t allow for much artistic expression. However, I realized that no one will like every piece created but someone will.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in creating custom pieces for Greek organizations and non-Greeks. I am most proud of the company’s growth and its uniqueness with every piece. I pride myself on having different options and pieces to choose from so no one will look the same. I also pride myself on using beads of quality such as gemstones and freshwater pearls (that’s something that a lot of other companies don’t pay much attention to).
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Atlanta is perfect for my business! Due to the diversity and culture of the city, it’s great! I would recommend others to start here but even if someone isn’t in Atlanta, I recommend just starting within their own community. I started in Albany, GA and worked my way up here in Atlanta. Dreams and hobbies can start small and can grow.. always leave room to grow.
