Conversations with the Inspiring Nicole Ikeda Whatley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Ikeda Whatley.

Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first started out as @smynings to showcase things to do in and around the Smyrna/Vinings neighborhood right outside of Atlanta. This slowly turned into my love for food, cooking, and travel and so I transitioned to a name that aligned with the content I was posting which was @nomnom_niki. It will be two years in July since I began, and I feel like I learn something new every day. Not just about the ever-changing world of social media, but about new things in Atlanta and Georgia. I’ve also met some amazing fellow food bloggers and restaurateurs.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My advice to anyone wanting to start any sort of blog is to stick with it and be consistent. Stay true to yourself and to your content, don’t force anything. With the social media algorithms changing all the time, there might be lulls and bumps along the way with followers, but you should start a blog to showcase your talents and passions, not to win a popularity contest.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I love engaging with followers, fellow bloggers, and local restaurants. I get giddy when I post a recipe and people say they tried it and it was a success, or that they tried a new spot and loved it based on something I posted. It’s all about spreading love and knowledge!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
There is a lingering stigma that will seem to always exist that women are incapable of somehow. No matter how educated you are, how well-traveled, how many obstacles a woman goes through, there will always be at least one person that thinks a man will be able to do it better.
