Today we’d like to introduce you to Feyi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
You might feel like you can do anything upon pressing play…
Owning each moment like a runway-ready goddess, charismatically crushing genre stereotypes, and singing with soul, sass, and spirit, Feyi immediately empowers. The 20-year-old Nigerian-American singer, songwriter, model, and artist refreshes, reinvigorates, and recharges R&B with a one-two punch of raw feeling and fierce confidence. In fact, she offers up an undeniable new archetype meant to impact, influence, and inspire.
“Feyi is everyone’s confident alter ego,” she explains. “You can listen to me when you want to believe in yourself or you just need someone to relate to. I’m real. I’m honest. I’m that best self you’re waiting to bring out. I stand for owning your individuality and loving who you are. Nothing I write is something I haven’t felt.”
Born in Dublin to parents originally from Nigeria, she moved to Indiana at just a year old. With dad a psychiatrist and mom a lawyer, Feyi grew up in a traditional environment founded on the importance of higher education. However, her creative spirit took over in high school as she privately uploaded early compositions to Soundcloud inspired by everyone from Cardi B and Nicki Minaj to Travis Scott.
For as much as she stood out at home, she also felt like something of an outsider at school.
“I grew up in a predominantly white suburban area, so I was always the outcast in the group,” she sighs. “I didn’t get bullied, but I never met people who looked like me. I just wanted to fit in. At the same time, many African families—mine included—look down on careers in music and entertainment. I initially had plans to go to medical school and become a plastic surgeon. Then, I stepped over that barrier and did what I really wanted to do. Breaking up the status quo empowered me. I realized being different is what makes someone awesome”
After recording early demos in her dorm room, she decided to take a non-traditional approach and switch to online courses, so that she could dive headfirst into music. She explained, “I want to be able to balance both, because education and my music are both important to me.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think that the hardest part for me was overcoming that initial anxiety of really being vulnerable as an artist and putting myself out there. I was so nervous to be judged but once I realized that I can’t care what other people think in order to be successful, things got much easier.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with FEYI – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I feel like being an artist in a very saturated industry is hard… however, one thing I pride myself on is being myself. I have a message and I want my music to express that.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the vibe and the energy that this city has… everyone is so ambitious.
