Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Johnson.
Danielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Today, I am a graphic designer and brand strategist. I’ve always been a creative person who loves the process of creating an idea to something that people can interact with. When I was younger, I wanted to be a fashion designer until my mom showed me how to sew and I realized I didn’t have the patience for it. Haha However, I did have a love for colors, shapes, patterns, and textures, but I didn’t know what career I would make of it.
I met my calling in graphic design and branding when I entered The One Club’s Advertising Boot Camp in 2010. My team and I ended up winning 1st place in the competition, which opened up the opportunity to learn about the world of Advertising and Branding. It also introduced me to the design school I later went to, The Creative Circus.
While in school, I became a partner in the company I co-own now, Champion Dreams Productions in 2013. Travis Brown and Zerrick Franklin, my really good friends from undergrad at Clark Atlanta University, started the company as just a photography and videography company. I then joined them to add the services of graphic design and web design and we’ve been growing ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. The road is still building actually. Which is exciting to me! Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was making a total career move into the Design world. I previously had a comfortable job at MetLife Investors straight out of college but I was very unhappy there. I didn’t have a creative outlet and I felt like was wasting my time and talent being there and not doing something creative. Leaving that job and starting back in school, I lost my financial security, for a long time, I might add. With that, I asked myself, “Did I make the right decision?” I also felt subpar to my peers at school and would often ask, “Am I good enough?” The combination of both questions weighed heavy and was a very rough time, but it was necessary. Now, the answer to both questions is, “Hell, Yes girl!” How I got through it was honestly just trusting the process. It feels good to overcome roadblocks, after the first couple really hard ones, I know whatever else lies ahead I can handle with the grace of God.
