Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Perry Walker, Esq.
Keisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After completing law school at The University of Tennessee, College of Law and moving to Atlanta, I was determined to get into the Entertainment Industry; however, I had no contacts nor experience in the area. Once I completed the bar, I found myself working for a debt collection law firm and simply despised the work I was doing as I was unfulfilled. My passion lied within pursuing Entertainment; however, I was afraid to leave a steady paycheck for the unknown. I had been praying and asking God to open a door for me and I felt led to quit the position that I was in, but I was paralyzed by fear and needed a little nudge. Well, that nudge turned into a huge push when I was fired. After being let go, I started my own firm at the suggestion of my mentor, John Christmas. Although this was totally bizarre to me being only a year out of law school, I decided to see if I could succeed as an entrepreneur. As a means of survival, I began handling real estate closings which afforded me financial stability while I pursued entertainment law. My initial focus was music law so I attended networking and industry events each week to pass my business cards, get to know the players in Atlanta, and learn the industry. Eventually, my first client came as a referral from one of my Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters and that was for a Management Agreement. I continued to study and honed in on music publishing to become an expert in that area thanks to the recommendation of a dear friend, Ryan Cameron. Through my networking endeavors, I eventually landed my first major artist, D-Roc of the Ying Yang Twins, and earned my first 5 figure retainer. About two years into my practice, I began working in the film and television industry and eventually delved into the new media space as well. Today, I continue to practice in music, film, television, new media, and corporate law.
Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that each journey has its ups and downs and my journey has been no different. Due to the fact that I had no prior relationships or expertise in entertainment, the process of becoming established and successful took a while longer, but I feel that it laid an awesome foundation which has given me longevity. In my personal life, I am laid back, low-key, and a very relaxed person; however being an entrepreneur in entertainment, I had to be a more aggressive, flashier version of myself. I sometimes struggled on how to balance the two worlds and not allow the entertainment industry to consume “Keisha,” but instead to bring “Keisha” to the industry. I allowI mastered my own way of relating and connecting with people and becoming a unique force in this space.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Perry Law Group – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Perry Law Group is a transactional law firm practicing in the areas of Corporate, Entertainment, and Real Estate law. Our Entertainment practice focuses in the areas of music, film, television, and digital media while our Real Estate practice focuses mainly on residential and commercial lease agreements as well as deed drafting and recordation. We pride ourselves on protecting and advocating for our clients while educating them so that they can advocate for themselves. We are known as connectors and several of our clients appreciate our readiness to introduce parties for collaboration and bridge the gap for them. Many of my colleagues refer to me as a power networker as I can be pretty fearless when there is someone I want to meet. That courage has established some long lasting and mutually beneficial relationships over the years.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
As I believe Atlanta is a leader in all things entertainment, I love the impact that it has. Atlanta has been a mecca for success and continues to be that. I chose Atlanta as my springboard because I felt it was large enough for me to thrive but small enough not to become lost in my journey. The thing I like least about Atlanta is the traffic!!!!
