Meet Flee Kay of Slug Life ENT. in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flee Kay.

Flee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music is and always has been my first love. It was the only therapy I used to cope with the sexual abuse I suffered from as an adolescent being that I was still afraid to speak on the matter since it was a member of my family. As a child, I would memorize lyrics from songs that were played after only hearing them a few times. My mother used to fuss at me about knowing my school work as much as I knew rap music saying that I would have straight A’s. The first time I spit a freestyle, I was 12 years old. My older cousin was pushing my brother to rap over a song we were listening to on my first radio gifted to me by my mother on Christmas. He couldn’t find the courage to do so, and it was at that moment that I decided to give it a shot. I just remember the huge smile my cousin had on his face when I finished; like he was proud of me. From then on, I knew music would open the door to the narrow path I chose to walk. I produced my first beat at 14 on a Dell desktop and recorded my first song at 18 in at a friends house in the garage. My inspiration and flow stemmed from rappers like Twista, T.I., Missy Elliot, Ludacris, and Lil’ Kim. My first Instagram freestyle that I released in the Winter of 2016 received an enormous amount of feedback from the 300 followers I had at the time, which is what I chose to build my foundation on. Three years, two mixtapes, thirty-something FleeStyleFriday’s, thousands of followers, several songs and shows later; here I am.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since I’ve begun taking my craft seriously, I’ve had to overcome several obstacles in my personal life in order to get to where I am today. Being that I am an independent artist, I had to invest in myself no matter the cost. A regular 9 to 5 wasn’t enough to cover my financial expenses at home and in the studio; so I continued to sell drugs which I’d been doing since 16 in order to make ends meet. During the Winter of 2018, I was kidnapped and held for ransom for drug money by someone I met through a family member and did business with, who was under the influence of heroin. I can’t go too far into detail, but my mother and the same cousin who influenced me to rap saved my life. A few months prior, my baby brother was arrested for an armed robbery and murder of a local drug dealer and has been awaiting trial for nearly two years. My best friend is also currently awaiting trial for similar charges; a case in which I was not involved in landed everyone in attendance including myself, on the news. Since then, I have changed my perspective on life as well as my surroundings in order to progress in a positive manner.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am currently working to start my own label and sign myself as the first artist to Slug Life Entertainment. My specialties are songwriting and I am most known for my #FleeStyleFridays on Instagram. The difference between myself and other artists is that I focus heavily on metaphorical bars and lyrical innuendoes and that I actually live the life I rap about.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Maintaining my character, integrity, respect, and honesty is what is most detrimental to me.
