Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Moulton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Scott. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I owned a previous company that installed and managed networking equipment. We had a lot of clients that were lawyers. In the late 90’s and into the beginning of the new century, lawyers began getting technical legal cases that involved computers. They needed someone to review and teach them about computers in these cases to defend their clients. After doing this for a few years, it grew into a business all its own. Today it has over taken all my other businesses and in 2008 I sold the previous company and kept the “forensic” business as well as the data recovery business called My Hard Drive Died due to their similarity in process.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall I would state that this business has been far easier than the other businesses I have had or dealt with. The hardest part of this business was convincing lawyers early on that I would be able to get the evidence they were looking for in the case and that I had the skills to testify about it. I have now testified in over 25 cases, including federal and international cases about computer and cell phone forensics.
Forensic Strategy Services – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a digital forensic company. What we do is take computers and cell phones, watches, and GPS as well as dozens of other devices, and use the data from those devices as evidence. We are able to defend our clients, or in some cases prove what did and did not happen, testifying in court about those details. We are specialists in recovering data from damaged equipment and drives. We are so good at getting data back from damaged devices that we have been hired by government agencies all over the world to teach our skill set. This prompted me to write a book as well as create a custom Forensic Data Recovery Class. My material is used all over the world and I have trained over 3000 people how to recover data from damaged equipment such as hard drives and solid state drives.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In owning several companies over a 25-year period of time, I have seen a lot of business come and go. It always makes me feel sad to see someone who spent a life saving, trying to achieve a dream of starting a business only to have fail, and sometimes destroy their lives in the process. I congratulate everyone who has survived, keeping their business afloat through all the hard times. I think you are a success if you still believe in what you started. Congratulations to all of you that did, you made it, you are a success!
