Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanayla Sweat.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A Few Wood Men was an unplanned birthing experience after trying to find the perfect gift for my grandfather. I’m from Nashville, Tennessee and everyone in Nashville knows that my grandfather is an extremely fashionable man. As well as being fashionable, he’s also the neighborhood pillar who has always tended to those in the community whether you needed a place to stay, were low on funds or needed a father figure; he was and is still that today.
To make a long story short, he was a watch collector and I noticed many of his watches were damaged, had become too heavy for his wrists, or were in a sense becoming out of style. I went on a witch hunt to find him a watch that fit his personality and stumbled upon wooden watches. At the time, I didn’t know that they even existed but I loved the look and liked how they were light-weight. He loved the watch and what started out as a gift for him turned into friends and family asking where they could get one too. This simple watch search turned into me researching other opportunities, which later evolved into A Few Wood Men.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but I don’t think that most adventures are. We’ve changed the look of the watches several times, we’ve gone through multiple social media managers, and we’ve had to revisit our strategy and execution milestones more times then we can count. Despite those struggles, we’ve continued to push through.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Few Wood Men story. Tell us more about the business.
A Few Wood Men is a wooden watch collection designed and created for Men of Distinction. It was created as a sounding board for black men who are striving to break down barriers, break curses, push boundaries, overcome strongholds, discover strength, come into self-love, and maintain peace while becoming fathers, husbands, leaders, commanders, and pillars within their community. We are most proud of providing positive representation for an underserved community.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I can see the industry becoming more socially conscious and aware of natural resources that could be used to create watches. The benefit of our company is that we already provide a wooden element in each timepiece. Because we use wooden elements, this allows our watches to be lighter in weight which I also could see the industry shifting to along with smaller faces/dials.
