Meet Micah Wyatt of DIFFERENT WOLF LLC in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Wyatt.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Micah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Decided in spring 2011, I was going to start researching about engineering and what you needed to become one. I got my first internship/assistant gig in July 2011 helping out a live album recording at a church. I helped set up mics along with everything else that was needed. That night, I opted to stay so I can watch and ask questions about sound engineering. I was hooked then and there being on a mobile setup seeing Pro tools and the different equipment was just exciting to be around it all. In the Fall, I got 2 studio internships at BackPack Music (home studio) and WonderRoot (a non-profit organization). I studied under Anthony Navarro and Jon Malmgren at Backpack mainly. They both gave me books and videos while sitting in sessions learning first hand what being an engineer was. It was overwhelming, but they taught me 2 key things that allowed me to say with it. One was training your ears takes time and you can’t rush it. The other and the one I live by to this day, “TRUST YOUR EARS”. There are a lot of key rules to live by but I kept these 2 at the top because it kept me focused. January 2012 is when it all started and I did my first full session on my own at WonderRoot with a guy named Shaka. The session actually went great and I remember he was amazed when I added a touch of reverb on his voice haha. That session gave me confidence and solidified that this is what I wanted to do.

*Around February, I was given another internship opportunity at The Blue Room Studios. Bill Jabr, the owner gave me a chance when I didn’t have much experience, but just a passion for music. I am forever thankful to him and the opportunity he provided. Blue Room was different. It worked with known independent and label artists. I found that out quickly when I saw people like DJ Scream, Waka Flocka, Sammie, Young Dro, Bobby V, and Ca$h Out all in the first week! It was definitely a different energy compared to where I had been but very much a good creative vibe. Bill Jabr along with James Kang the head engineer, took me under their wings and put me straight to work. James Kang has a discipline and focus along with a skill that has him in high demand to this day. There were no days off and I loved it. I had my ups and downs but I just kept showing up and worked to get better. Around August 2012, I was given the opportunity to do sessions at Blue Room. I was trash, to say the least, haha. Everyone wanted James and I was no James. I got laughed at, ignored and just flat out looked at as unworthy to do sessions in the eyes of some clients. I learned two more very key things that I live by always. “Figure it out” and “Don’t mess up the vibe!” I was thinking too much about not messing up instead of focusing on the music and enjoyment it gave me to help create it. The results of that were clients not wanting to work with me. So, I re-evaluated my process and locked in to what I knew I had and had shown and brought it to all my sessions. Just being myself and really going all out to provide the best for the artist and the records. Making sure the client is comfortable and free to create at their best. That mindset changed everything. August 2013, I became a manager at Blue Room and was a full-on engineer as well. The rest is history! Since that time, I created Different WOLF and would become known as “Wolf” aka Engineered By WOLF. I have been fortunate to have worked on many major and independent songs as well as projects. I continue to learn, grow and work with many incredible clients while also studying from and working with other great engineers specifically my good friend and mixing/recording engineer Keith Dawson and producer Kevin “K Wills” Williams. Engineering has provided so much for me. 7yrs in. No stopping!

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely wasn’t a smooth road. Struggled a lot with clients that were used to more seasoned engineers. Being fast and efficient. All that takes time and you can’t rush time. You just continue to work to get better. Also, just stay working. Finding out how to work with people and lock in with clients. Making sure you provide any and everything they need so they can trust that you have there best interest at heart instead of just being another button pusher in the control room. Learning your sound. Figuring out what mics you like, pre-amps, plugins, DAWs, and monitors. Learning the technical aspects. How to figure out the root of issues if they occur. Providing good input for people. Staying alert and available because you can be called on at any time of the day. Working with others, brainstorming and networking with other musicians and creatives. You have to earn all this and more to just always stay evolving knowing and staying in tune with the pulse of what’s going on.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I was born in Modesto, CA but Atlanta is pretty much home. I’ve been in Georgia since I was 2. I grew up in Griffin, GA that’s home too, which is like 40 mins south of Atlanta but we came to Atlanta all the time because a lot of family is from and live here. My dad is from Atlanta. So, the culture and everything is in me. What I least like is that the culture I grew up on has changed over time. The feel of the city has changed like most American cities but the party atmosphere and out of towners have made it a little different. It’s still the shit though. What I like I most is how unique Atlanta is. What I mean is, its the hub and the starting ground for so much talent thats popped off from the south. To say you gotta go to Atlanta to work a move, specifically artistically is a big deal. And its still growing. You got to network here. You have to plug in and be connected here. The pulse of hip hop is here, and has been for awhile. Having corporations and companies move/have moved down here has helped the whole state of Georgia as well. We don’t have a Wall Street or a Hollywood or things like that, but we have built our own versions of that because of the work we’ve put in and held it down. Now the rest of the world knows and understands this is where you should be. For anything.
