Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Smalls.
Terrence, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Atlanta, GA.
At the age of 9, I moved to the DC Metro Area where I resided until graduating high school.
After High School; I returned to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College.
While attending Morehouse, I was able to develop friendships and guiding principles that I still cherish today.
I graduated from Morehouse College in 2012 with a degree in Finance.
Following Morehouse, I attended a post grad program at the London School of Economics where I studied Business Negotiations. This experience was amplified by the fact that the 2012 Summer Olympics were taking place throughout the duration of my program.
While in London, I had the opportunity to shadow one of my mentors who oversaw sports and entertainment sponsorships for Chase Bank at the time. His role, responsibilities, and relationships inspired me to pursue a career in entertainment.
Shortly after returning from London, I began interviewing at various talent agencies in Los Angeles with the belief that California was where I wanted to begin my professional career.
After many interviews, I was offered an opportunity to go on a world tour as a personal assistant to a popular music artist.
Not the first job I was expecting out of college, but one I will never forget.
I am forever grateful for the experiences had, lessons learned, skills acquired, and invaluable relationships formed.
I served is this role until the completion of the tour, at which point I decided to pursue my entrepreneurial interests.
In 2014, I founded a consulting company with a focus on business development and brand management.
While many of our clients were in the media/entertainment industry, our first corporate client was a health tech company.
My company was tasked with the responsibility of securing a brand ambassador for the client, as well as producing consumer activations and digital marketing campaigns.
This experience was both rewarding and challenging, and ultimately transitioned my focus from the entertainment industry to the technology industry.
After consulting a variety of tech startups, I was presented an opportunity to join the founding team of Goodr, a social impact startup with a mission to reduce food waste and end hunger.
I currently serve as the VP of Business Development for Goodr, overseeing sales strategy and new market expansion.
I’m proud to say that I have never worked a more fulfilling job, and am excited to come to work each day knowing that our efforts positively impact both people and the planet.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While turbulent at times, my path to success has been both enjoyable and informative.
I’ve learned a lot about myself and others in pursuit of personal and professional growth.
Some of the biggest obstacles overcome were related to the management of my time, finances, health, and relationships.
Faith and perseverance enabled me to convert adversity into education and motivation.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Goodr – what should we know?
Goodr is a sustainable food waste management company. Our mission is simple; feed more, waste less. We help ensure the safe and efficient delivery of surplus food from businesses that have it, to people that need it. Our proprietary software enables businesses to measure and management surplus food inventory; providing them with the tools, services, and data necessary to receive tax deductions in exchange for food donations. We help businesses increase profits, while also making a positive impact on both people and the planet. As a company, I am most proud of the community support and encourage we’ve received from people that we’ve never met. I think what sets us apart most from our competitors is our company culture and organic connection to the communities we serve.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The list is long when it comes to people that have played a positive role in my success. Family, friends, teachers, mentors, and colleagues; they have all influenced my personal and professional development.
Above all, I have to give credit to God for waking me up each day with the strength, energy, intellect, and relationships necessary to pursue my dreams.
