Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lee.
Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, I grew up watching my Aunt and Cousin do hair I grew tired of watching them and thats where my Journey began as I began to grow I wanted to do more to help people. You see I had a sister who died of cancer but before her passing she had to indergo treatment which pulled her hair out and she had to wear wigs so at 16/17years old she wore them and one day someone who was suppose to be her friend pulled her wig off. I remember when my sister Bremda shared this story I felt so bad but there was nothing I could do until I found my love for hair. I began making wigs and putting on fashion shows in my community. I did hair in Philly all my life friwnds, family…etc. In 2006 I moved to Augusta, Ga. I remember talking to my husband. I told him I was going to start by working in a call center. My plan was to take a pole to find out what women liked and disliked about their salon experience once I received that info I opened my home to a select number of people. I did their hair and they loved it. In 2010 I felt it was time to open my salon. I remember having only 500.00 I seen this building called to set appointment to look. My husband and I went and I was ready to step out there. The man said its 1100.00 to move in and 575 a month all I had was 500. He said no worries give me that I will hold and give yall the keys and yall can fix up. He further stated the I can pay rent of 500. And didnt have to start until January which gave us 3 month free. I opened my first Salon October 2010. A Touch of Elegance Salon. I grew from 1 client for a whole year to having to hire other stylist bwcause clientel grew tremendously. Thank you God. We later Closed the salon in 2015 when I moved to Grayson, GA. I opened two salon suits that didnt work out because Im a people person. I felt lonely in a box so I closed those down. I have a Product line Beautiful Crowns that my husband and I created for hair loss and a special Beard Butter for men. In 2018, I felt it was time to open another Salon. I wanted to bring something different to the Snellville area. I want women to come in the Salon and receive an experience. Women should be treated like the queens. We work, take care of families, school… etc. We hardly have time for self and to top it off, women are hard on each other so I created an atmosphere where we love up on everyone. We make them not only look beautiful but feel beautiful. We are also an educational facility where we facilitate classes to help stylist advance in the field. We hold in house classes for staff as well as our clients.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it was not easy, I stated I opened a salon in 2018 but that was the 4th Salon but the first salon I ever partnered with someone.
So In October 2018, I partnered with a young lady and Bella Cheveux (beautiful hair) Salon was birthed in the city of Snellville, two days after a beautiful grand opening that young lady bailed on me. Sent a text stating she was backing out. I was hurt, upset and confused. I was standing in the beauty salon that I could not manage by myself. I never considered it but as I looked around I kept saying to myself I know God didn’t bring me this far to leave me. I was so confused but I couldnt give up so I kept pushing. I had to make a decision close or find another building. With a lot of sacrifices, heartache loss of friendships… etc., we closed the salon. My husband and I began to looking and we found a place 5min from the previous salon that was more affordable. August 2nd we moved in. I believe everything happens for a reason. Im still not where I want to be. This process is hard but with God all things are possible. He (God) and my husband are the reasons I havent given up. Its not an option! Once a month, I travel to Augusta and service my clients there. I travel and facilitate classes, I have work photo shoots, Ive done music videos with Rae Sremmurd and Ayanis. I had lots of fun working those projects but I had a desire for more.
I currently work as an educator at Heath and Style institute in Kennesaw, GA. Thats a whole story in it self. I absolutly love working as an educator and this school allows me to be myself. I have grown so much and learned so much about myself. (Always remain teachable) I’m a platform artist and educator with Dave Ray of Beauty Werks. I’m a wife married to my husband Clinton for 24yrs, mother of four
Kyle, Jasmine, Keshia and Kylah. My Beautiful Crowns and grandmother of eight. I absolutely love my family. My dream is to have an educational facility where cosmetology students will have a place to transition. Also, to have salons that cater to women.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bella Cheveux Salon – what should we know?
We are a multicultural salon. We do color, perms relaxers, extensions, weaves, braids, cuts… etc., we are looking to hire lash and brow techs. My specialty is weaves and design cuts. I’m known for my Natural weaves and Hair Cuts. What makes me proud is that we make our clients happy and the education that we provide. Our clients walk away educated and I believe that and how we love up on our clients sets us apart.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Integrity is the utmost importance. We believe in honesty and a sense of humor. I love to laugh and making orhers laugh and smile when they don’t want to. If our clients ask for a service and we feel it will compromise the integrity of her hair, we will not do it. We will educate them and explain we can do something else, treat their hair to bring it back to a healthy state and if we feel at that time, we can provide that service, we will but we care more about the health and well being of our clients.
