Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Beth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always loved history, art and design. I have memories of looking through my mother’s magazines and art books as a little girl. I also had an uncle (who has passed away) who used to take me to visit art museums and galleries, as well as architectural landmarks (Biltmore House in Asheville and Oakland Cemetery, etc.). It has been in my blood!
In college and graduate school, I pursued my love of history and was a teacher for several years. Upon having children, I gave up teaching. I always helped friends with styling and decorating their homes and one day a friend commented – “You know, you really could do this for a living.” So, on a whim, I decided to take an online interior design course. I loved it and was able to get a part time job with a respected design firm here in town. I loved the creativity, the client interactions and I also loved that it allowed me to have a more flexible schedule so I could be a mom as well. I decided to form my own LLC and see where it took me. One friend hired me. And then another. Eventually, I was busy enough that I started Beth Brown Interiors full time. I have been busy ever since and I am flattered that the referrals keep coming! In the design business, word of mouth is everything and it is so gratifying to have built a full-time business on my own. It is a lot of work but I love what I do!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel lucky – it has mostly been a smooth road. This business is tough because there are a lot of moving parts. Decorating can be expensive and sometimes things go wrong. Furniture may come in damaged or be delayed for a month (or three) and it can be frustrating for clients. I try to be upfront about the realities of customized furniture and the steps involved. I also will go out of my way to make sure that my clients are happy with our services and the finished product.
Trying to balance work and family continues to be a personal struggle. I like working for myself and making my own hours, but it also means that I am almost always “on” as a mom or designer. I have to try to carve out time for myself!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beth Brown Interiors – what should we know?
