Meet Sukari Johnson of Passport Moms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sukari Johnson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For me, it was a progression of different things, being married and having two kids back-to-back and my second child being in the NICU for three months. When I had my son early, I went through extreme anxiety, and what I know now is a little bit of depression. Yes, I had post par tum and all of that, but this was different. I know longer recognized myself the same way. I stopped doing and being a part of the things, I loved, in fear of not be accessible to my kids and husband, it drove me nuts!! I forgot what I loved to do, and go, and if I went somewhere where would I go? and with who? So, I started on a journey doing women seminars, self-care retreats, coaching, you named it! I was looking for something that was out there for mothers to connect to. Mothers are taught to be a certain way after having kids, and not do anything that looks like too much fun, because that’s before you have kids. I realized that having children was not going to stop me from traveling, having fun or experiencing all what life has to offer.

Speaking with other like-minded mothers, and close friends I realized I was not alone that there was a need for all the mothers to spend time rejuvenating and it wasn’t a crime to getaway! to fulfill our own well! I wanted to create an atmosphere of keeping our minds enlightened and capable of making the right decisions for our families we must take care of ourselves first and foremost.

Passport Moms provides an opportunity for mothers to learn from each other in an organic way. We learn from a diverse group of mothers that we have more in common than differences. Mothers of all ages, stages, cultures, and backgrounds have come together to share their life experiences. Those shared life experiences help to provide insight to new mothers. Passport Moms have held events and traveled on our inaugural trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica 2019.

Whether the Passport Moms are single, married or divorced; our partners will know this experience has made us better mothers. We know how to laugh and feel sexy without feeling guilty. The camaraderie forged with the other mothers will last forever.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t know if there are any smooth roads starting a business. Taking mothers out of the country with different expectations and travel experiences was not an easy task. Conducting research and asking the mothers what their travel interests were made for one of the challenges for developing Passport Moms.

I myself am a mother so I wanted to make sure everyone who came on our trips was taken care of, not everyone wanted to do the same things and that’s ok. Being as detailed oriented as possible, ensuring mothers felt comfortable coming on our trips was a must. In the end the challenges we faced preparing for the trips and curating the trips we enjoyed seeing the mothers having fun and living their best life.

We would love to hear more about your business.
As the founder of Passport Moms, I establish the travel destinations, identify the activities and community outings. I curated all the private events for our diverse group of mothers. What sets Passport Moms apart from other travel groups is our target group of “only mothers”. I am so proud of our group of mothers. Whether the mothers are biological moms, adoptive moms, or surrogate moms, all the mothers have a perspective of life that provides insight to the other mothers. My trips are high class, and the details are with the love all mothers give to the world.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up experiencing traveling on a plane from the age of five years old until I was 10 years old to visit one of my grandmothers. Being an only child, I learned a lot of things by myself. My childhood was very well rounded with different experiences that shaped me. I was raised in Bronx, NY then I came to Atlanta, attended Tuskegee University, then went on to get my master’s at Troy University. I was always a go get er! A risk taker in everything I did, that was always me in my formative years, but always the tortoise in some respects as well. I always was in a field of helping people and involved in advocacy work in the community and always giving back. Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Democratic Party of Georgia, NCNW, Church activities, SCLC, always wanted to be a part of a positive change, the list goes on. Helping people and bringing love, life and service has always been my mantra.
