Today we’d like to introduce you to Makeda Iroquois.
Makeda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
On my 12th birthday we went to target and my dad bought me “Diary of Alicia Keys” which somehow compelled me to re-write all the songs in my diary (definitely wasn’t aware of the parallels there at the time, wow). I guess you could say that’s where my songwriting career popped off. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I started making music seriously. Just got my first MacBook Pro for school and realized GarageBand was a thing. I’m glad I started playing with it though because usually things I have to sit and figure out subconsciously intimidate me so I often don’t delve into things I’m not immediately good at (omg such a bad habit). I know I’m really into something when I choose to actually sit down and do computations to figure it out. Once the basic GarageBand computations were complete “enough” I tweeted a YouTube link to a rough cover of Erykah Badu’s On&On. Twitter took to it well lol.
Today I’m still trying to figure out how to get “somewhere else,” so I never really thought about how I got to where I am today. Really just by the grace of God for real.
Has it been a smooth road?
There’s been a lot of ups and downs. Entirely smooth by no means. A lot of struggles mainly with self-confidence and disappointment. But there have been some great moments as well.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a singer/songwriter/performer. Growing up, I was most known for dance and theater, which often included voice. I love to perform. It’s my favorite thing, especially when my self-confidence about my gift is high. I love to entertain. I think what sets me apart is the ability to relate to my audience. I take the best parts of people and perform it back to them. It’s amazing.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see my work molding new human beings on a New Earth.
