Meet Raquel Richardson Thomas of Dream Catchers Corp.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Richardson Thomas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Raquel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My start to business started when I was a child. I dreamed of being an author and poet! Also, I remember playing store and I was always the owner. Hard to believe because we were poor and living in poverty. I grew up around lots of drugs and alcoholism. I spent some time in foster care as well from being abused by my mother. Despite my childhood circumstances, I knew one day I would wear a suit and build something that provided a need to others.

I started my first business a commercial cleaning company while still working in corporate America. It was hard. There was never enough time for my corporate job and my business. I worked sun up and sun down but I was determined to build that business. I also had a newborn which pushed me harder to start building a legacy. Within, 12 months that company made half a million in revenue. Needless to say, I left corporate America.

The cleaning company was a great starter business for me. In my corporate career, I had learned all I needed to know to build my own company. By year two of being an entrepreneur, I opened my first daycare center. The daycare centers were fueled by my son! I wanted to be near him and I wanted to create the type of daycare that I felt parents needed to feel comfortable. I wanted parents to know that their child received the best education and care. We create a state of the art curriculum.

After we opened the 2nd daycare we branched into several other businesses. We were very fortunate to generate three quarters of a million dollars the 2nd year. We took a center from being in the red to being in the black within a years time.

Currently, I have five operating businesses. I feel it is important to have a diversified portfolio. We have our hands in the restaurant business, bar/nightlife, retail, consulting, and a non-profit that creates free programs teaching entrepreneurship to underprivileged youth. I’m also a published author. I have two books that are currently on shelves right now; What Becomes of a Broken Soul and Shifting into Purpose: The Journey to Entrepreneurship. We are currently in the process of publishing five children’s books teaching entrepreneurship.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been easy. There are challenges and days you need to regroup and start over. There are days that everything goes wrong but yet it’s always a learning experience. As an entrepreneur, you are challenged daily but what I have learned is hiring a strong and dedicated staff is difficult. While it’s a challenge at times being an entrepreneur I love it!
