Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeannie Ferguson.
Jeannie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out helping my sister Tasha Monique (Designer of Big Girls United) dress the Models. I had no desire to be a model, thinking I was too short and too big. My sister proved me wrong. We were doing a show “The Circle of Sisters” at the Jacob Javitz. There was a model that didn’t show up and my sister needed a size 18 and I was it.
We argued up to the very second it was time for me to walk because I never wanted to be a model and she’s making me do something I absolutely hated. Once I hit the stage and walked like my life depended on it. LOL, I got a standing ovation. From that day on I said I can do this.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I’ve had many struggles being in this industry. I was always often told I was too short at 5’3 and too big at a size 16/18. Models that were 5’7 and taller and sizes 8- 12 worked all the time. I submitted to agencies in and out of the country and was told I was not industry standard and I should grow my hair back. I auditioned and submitted for major fashion shows and was always told I needed to be at least 5’7. I was told my look was harsh and not what the world is looking for. I never let that deter me from doing something I fell in love with.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Walk This Way Runway Workshop – what should we know?
I have a workshop called Walk This Way that I teach twice a year. I’m a runway coach & mentor. I specialize in Runway Techniques, Posing and Perfecting walks and building confidence. I love teaching women who don’t even know how to walk in heels become a model. I’m known for being a Runway Slayer, having a unique walk at 5’3 that makes folk think I’m 6’3. I’ve been teaching for nine years and I am very proud of the ladies that I taught/mentored over the years and are now Working Models. The things that set me apart is I’m relatable, down to earth and I am always willing to help others. I know what’s for me is for me. Helping others will not block my blessings.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I didn’t really have Mentors. But there were a few people who encouraged me to keep going and a bunch of designers that gave me chance when others didn’t. My sister Tash Monique for throwing me into the industry. Mia Amber (May she S.I.P) For always encouraging me to keep going when I wanted to give up. Ashley Stewart for showing the world that Petite Plus exist and for letting me be the one to represent for Petite Plus Women in 2 National Campaigns Robert E. Knight for trusting me to sell his garments right off the Runway. Monif C. for never having an issue with my height and giving me a chance to be on National Television to represent her Brand. Sharon Quinn for pushing me to get ready for when my time comes. Gwen De’voe for Putting me in my 1st major fashion show. She was my yes when others said No. La-Teffaney Scott for giving me the opportunity to teach my runway skills to her contestants.
