Today we’d like to introduce you to Satya Hawley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Oakland, California. I started singing at the age of 6 and later picked up guitar and piano. During my upbringing, there was always some form of music playing in the background. My mom was a dancer; therefore her influence of expressing emotions through different art forms inspired me from a very young age.
I attended OSA – Oakland School of the Arts in the Vocal Department, where I began performing around the city. I am currently a student in Loyola University of New Orleans majoring in Popular and Commercial music. I released my first single ‘Not Knowing’ from my 5-track EP. The EP, ‘Flourish Against Fracture’, will be released in mid-January. With a passion for songwriting and connecting to people’s inner emotions, I have created a lyrical foundation of songs that speak to others in helping heal their pain. Music to me is very therapeutic, it doesn’t always have to be perfect, it’s allowed to be rough around the edges. My biggest inspirations are Sade, Lauryn Hill, India Arie, and Feist who have helped shape who I am as an artist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I grew up having intense learning disabilities and in my younger years, I dealt with different forms of anxiety. Due to this, most of the time I felt very scattered in my own mind. Once I picked up a guitar and singing, I started to use singing and writing as a way to straighten out my thoughts and feelings. I have found music to be a very prominent part of my self-expression, and it has become very therapeutic to me.
I was raised by a single mother because my father left before I was born. My grandparents were a huge part of my upbringing. Since my mom had to work extra hard, my grandparents would make sure to bring me to all of my music lessons. I am so grateful to have my grandparents and my mom for being so supportive of my music career.
My upcoming EP, ‘Flourish Against Fracture’, was written in high school. Releasing it has given me a huge sense of closure on that time of my life. The past year has been very transformative, and I am happy to be confident on this new path with my music and myself.
What should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
For the past year, I have been working intensely on growing my team of creatives and look to add people who specialize on different aspects of my career. Together, we have worked to create a community where music is not only an art form but an individual’s expression. Our team was established on the belief that music is not only for consumption but for an individual’s expression of self. We nurture a person’s authenticity and look to add in new and exciting elements to their art. My lyrics are focused on my personal experiences as a young woman in today’s society. By telling my truth through music, I believe that my songs touch people in ways that other artists cannot compare.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was during high school in fall of 2016. I was granted the opportunity to sing back-up for Coldplay. Over 60,000 people watched us sing two songs in the Levy Stadium in San Francisco. Aside from being nerve-wracking, it was exhilarating and an amazing experience to work with such well-known artists.
