Today we’d like to introduce you to William Vance.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
One morning, I woke up for my 8-4 job after a fun night. We went to the Ubar to celebrate for my birthday and I didn’t get home until 3 am knowing I had to be up around 6 am. I was driving and thinking on my way to work and instantly knew I wanted to make money on my own time and wake up when I wanted.
When I was four, I was practically forced to take piano lessons and be in the choir so music was incorporated in my life pretty early. When I was in 5th grade, I joined the band because I liked Nick Cannon and he was the star in “Drumline,” so that allowed me to out the church choir. My mom didn’t let me play the drums so eventually, I chose the saxophone.
My skills on the saxophone were above average, but I honestly didn’t care because the more time I spent participating in all counties music events and jazz festivals; my friends were excelling past me in sports. Eventually, in 11th grade, I made music my primary focus and dedicated my life towards it. By 12th grade, I mastered a new instrument and was known to be a legit musician in my community. I took things further when my mentor, Mr. Barrett D. Alexander introduced me to Logic X Pro to produce my own beats and compositions.
In high school, I made the “GMEA All-State Band” which gave me scholarship opportunities to go to school for music. I went to South Carolina State University for one semester majoring in the music industry then transferred to Talladega College where I got my degree in music.
I worked as an apprentice in my field for two years and knew it was time for a change. I called my friend Khiy because she produced beats and told her to give me a beat she didn’t mind letting go. That song is now “Playa” featuring Michael Wilson with over 10,000 streams.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m from the southside of Dekalb where it’s so many potholes the roads would never be smooth. Trying to finance your own business individually has to be one of the hardest things any entrepreneur could do! I run into obstacles every day, but my passion gives me drive and helps convince myself that I know who I am. People will try to tell you who you are, how you’re supposed to act, and what you stand for so a strong mentality is necessary to block out the negative energy!
Please tell us more about your music, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
