Meet Stephanie Eyison of Atarah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Eyison.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Three years ago, I had my first baby with no idea about the possible aftermaths of childbirth. A few months after, my hair started falling out. I lost all my edges and more than half my hair. I was near depressed

and desperate for a solution. With my high school specialization being science, I researched and tested an endless number of formulations just to help my hair grow back. I was very picky about the ingredients because I was nursing my daughter and did not want her to ingest any harmful or toxic substances due to my carelessness. The formula had to be gentle enough for a baby but effective enough to grow back healthy, thick hair. I resorted to an all-natural and organic formula to help with my hair growth. After about three weeks, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. My final formulation as working! In about 6 weeks, my edges were significantly improved and by month 3, I could actually go out without wearing a wig!

I started praying about what to do next and one day, while in the shower, I heard a voice audibly tell me “sell the oil”. I immediately rubbished it – I had zero qualification when it came to hair and did not feel competent. To further strengthen my belief, I got an offer for my dream job and shelved the idea.

Within that period, I shared the formulation with friends and family and all I kept getting was awesome feedback. But I was still stubborn till I was let go by my company. Crushed and defeated, I took sometime to regroup and decided to heed the call. Atarah (which means ‘crown’ in hebrew) was officially launched on July 23, 2018. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I am so excited about where God is taking the brand. Strangers have become fierce advocates and friends. I feel truly blessed.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a very bumpy road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Steep learning curves, disappointments and crushed expectations have all been part of my story and I am grateful. My perspective when it comes to challenges is that they are inevitable, and are stepping stones. Every challenge will eventually work out for my good. I recall a recent situation where the manufacturers for my labels had made a poor quality label even after clear instructions had been outlined. A bulk order had to be shelved because I didn’t want that to be associated with the brand, causing me to absorb the cost… And anyone who started their business from the ground up with no funding will tell you how hard it is to fund everything on your own; and then to lose some money… It’s disheartening… but it will work out for my good. I truly believe that.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Atarah story. Tell us more about the business.
Atarah Haircare is is a haircare brand that hopes to change the narrative of black hair by providing

groundbreaking products that enhance healthy hair growth from scalp to strand. At the heart of the brand is a desire to rewrite the notion that black women cannot grow healthy hair. The brand is dedicated to creating hair-growth solutions for women of color. As a company, we are proud of the feedback we’ve received from supporters, friends…It shows that we are doing something right. We strive to use only natural and certified organic ingredients and that is our hope for the brand in any future endeavors.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe in luck. I am a firm believer in grace and favor. God ordered my steps to start this business and I believe everything that the brand is supposed to be has already been written by God. I just have to make sure I am going according to His will.
