Today we’d like to introduce you to Jadah Quick.
Jadah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Adulting With Moi started in December 2017… the brand and business began that following year due to the attraction. I guess how I got here really comes from my childhood. I grew up in a middle-class family for my younger years, until the infamous 2008 recession hit. That recession not only made my hard-working parents lose their jobs but also exposed their lack of financial literacy/ education when it came down to surviving the crisis. I never blamed them for not being taught key fundamentals to saving for a rainy day or investing while you earned your income. They weren’t to blame because their parents didn’t know either to teach them and the schools rarely talked about it. During that rough patch, I was just starting my High school career at Buxton. Although I lived 3 hours from home, I still felt the financial strain my parents dealt with as both of them lost their jobs within months of each other. I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it at the time, but I knew I wanted to be better than them when it came to actually finishing college in 4 years, and being more financial literate for them and my future kin to come.
With that said, fast forward to post-graduation Spring 2017. I had just graduated from Mount Holyoke College, where I received my B.A. in Mathematics and Mandarin. This afforded me the opportunity to become a young professional in the financial industry. As I experienced the new world of “adulthood”, I remember calling my dad and jokingly complaining that this ” Adulting life” isn’t for me. I joked about the bills I had to pay, ” on time”, every month and the debt that I owed from College and Private School. I remember him saying, I know baby girl, it’s different out here in the “Real World”, but you have been equipped with the tools and knowledge and most importantly, God, to not only survive but thrive in this ” Adulthood”. That conversation struck something in me that I believe helped create AWM today.
I knew if I wanted to help myself or anyone, I needed to be the example I wanted to see first. So I started reading and listening to podcasts about Financial literacy and wealth-building, hoping to find some secret formula to success and wealth. To my surprise, as I was researching and learning, I developed a passion to not only help myself but my friends and peers, as well. I used some tools that helped me get organized with my finances and debt and being the friendly person I am, I would share with whoever that listened. Thus creating the platform Adulting With Moi, where I give a millennial’s perspective on Adulthood, by engaging, as well as educating young folks on financial literacy through Saving, Budgeting, and Paying off Debt.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no… it has been smooth in regards to helping my clients reach their financial goals we set up. However, my goal is to reach more and create a movement that inspires even more millennials to want to become financially literate and make better financial decisions at an earlier age. When I hear this question, I think of two aspects my personal financial goals and then of course my business, so I’ll answer both.
In regards to running a business, this has been a huge learning curve for me. I tend to use the method ” Trial and Error” so if I see something work for a business, I try and put my spin on it to hopefully expand my business and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. ( You won’t know until you try). I’ve learned that if you are in doubt with a concept, you have no idea about, surrounding yourself with other successful folks really does help you not make AS many mistakes. As a new business owner, you have to be willing to FAIL and get back up again. Maybe the first post you post didn’t get enough likes… SO WHAT!?… keep going and continue to build your brand. You also have to be willing to INVEST, in yourself and the business. I knew I wasn’t a coder and didn’t try to be one, so I invested in a web designer. I wanted to be more active on social media, but couldn’t manage the time to dedicate the creativity that comes along with it, so I hired a social media manager. You need to acknowledge your strengths and weakness and plan accordingly.
In regards to me obtaining my personal financial goals, it’s a long road to becoming financially educated. There is a ton of information and ways and tools one could use to gain more knowledge and insight. I personally have a goal of becoming debt-free by the time I reach 30. (By 2025) So I am slowly but surely working towards that goal diligently while I continue to make wise financial decisions now so I can make that goal a reality.
Please tell us about Adulting With Moi.
Adulting with Moi is a program designed to educate and engage millennials about financial literacy. Created from the perspective of a fellow millennial, this series will provide you with valuable financial tips and fundamentals that will help you survive and thrive in the modern economy. I basically help any fellow millennial through this thing called “Adulting”. From answering questions about 401 K plans to creating an emergency fund, or investing in the stock market to paying off that maxed-out credit card. I help get them organized about their finances and create effective methods that work with their personality when it comes to handling their money, all the while empowering them to become more independent and more confident in their own thinking about finances.
I currently offer one on one consultations as well as speak/host at various events about finance. I also created Chats with Moi, which is an interview-style segment that aims to introduce millennials to experienced industry experts. You’ll be able to get personal insight, guidance, and answers to your most pressing financial questions from top gurus in the space, these can be found via my Youtube Channel. ( Adulting With Moi).
When you book a consultation with Moi, I would describe them as a focused one-on-one consulting session that will provide you with the financial systems and secrets they didn’t teach you in school to help you take control of your personal finances and build generational wealth.
What sets me apart from others is my genuine, authentic personality. I’ve received a ton of feedback, not only from recurring clients of mine but strangers on social media stating that my persona and the way I present myself makes them feel comfortable to want to engage and learn about money. I believe that’s my “nitch”, outside of the fact that God is the head of my life, of course. As a financial educator, my mission is to provide you with expertise and trusted resources to help you successfully navigate through adulthood and conquer your biggest financial challenges head-on and thats what I plan on doing when you book with Moi.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Yes, I believe there are plenty of things.. but first and foremost, I have to thank my amazing and supportive parents for ALWAYS pushing me to go after what I wanted and to be bold and confident in who I am, as well as whose I am! I believe with that type of upbringing gave me the courage and confidence to step out on faith and go to a boarding high school at the age of 12. That type of encouraging love held me accountable when I made mistakes or errors and wanted to give up. That type of fearless strength came in handy when I decided to major in Mathematics not because it came “easy” to me, but because I liked challenges and my parents always taught me to conquer my fears, no matter what. That type of dynamic, unique upbringing has led me to where I am today, in life, career-wise, and above all else, mindset wise. That by itself has been an amazing contribution to who and where I am today. Because of that heathy upbringing, I do believe the sky is the limit. I do firmly believe that I have to do what I HAVE to do now so that I can do what I WANT to do later. My parents named me Jadah ( Jah-Dah), descendent of Judah, from the bible, and it means Wise. My middle name is Camara ( Ka-Mara), which is West African, and that means teacher. I like to say that my parents knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they would always declare over me to be my name and to walk in my purpose, so thats what I have been raised to do and by God’s glory and grace, I intend to do just that.
