Today we’d like to introduce you to Felly The Voice.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Gary, Indiana. I am the youngest of seven. My mom and dad have always encouraged me and my siblings to use our talents. I was born and raised in the church. So I’ve been doing music in some form or capacity since I could remember. I went to a performing arts school where I started to study music classically. Once I started to understand the theory of music and the soul in gospel music, plus a lot of lovemaking in R&B (LOL), I pretty much started to fall in love with music being my full-time commitment. I graduated high school and attended Indiana University in Bloomington.
Indiana. I majored in music education with a concentration in vocal performance. I’ve done what most artists have done in the career, which is be a part of a group LOL. The group thing never manifested, but it did teach me how to create for others because we had no one to help write our original music. In 2011 I auditioned for American Idol with my friends. I end up making it to the Hollywood Round in California. This was supposed to be my big break. All I want to do was be able to go on tour. Back then, my arrogance would not allow me to think that I wasn’t going to finish in the top 10. I GOT ELIMINATED AFTER ONLY THE FIRST WEEK.
This was the moment that drove me to be a writer. I wanted to take control over my success. As a creative, you have power over who decides if your art will be available. And if you’re incredible and successful, the industry will seek after you no matter their opinion of how you look, or if you’re cool, etc. I moved to Atlanta a few months after getting eliminated and I’ve been grinding ever since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When your passion haunts you, it makes it hard for you to spend time doing other stuff. Sometimes relationships, vacations, comfort, eating every day, etc. (lol) These things sometimes fall by the waist side when it comes to your dreams. For me, it was jobs, steady income, and even a place to stay. I had about ten different jobs when I moved down to the A. I mean, I did EVERYTHING. Telemarketing, security, cable (both install and sales). I’ve quit at least two jobs after the first day (and when I say quit, I mean I got fired for quitting LMAO). I used to have to sleep in studios, over friends’ houses, on a bench outside (that was only one time but it was super cold that night).
I used to eat the free breakfast at hotels when I didn’t have any money to eat (technically it’s not stealing because it’s free… to guest… I was a guest on those days. lol) I used to plan out my trips so WHEN I ran out of gas, I could call Hero (GA’s service for vehicles in need of help on the highway… love those guys) Some of these hardships were self-inflicted because of lack of effort, some of them happen because of my lack of business skills, but I endured ALL of it for the bigger picture. To become a successful songwriter… It was worth it…
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
In 2016 I quit my job and pursued songwriting full time. Since then, I’ve built a resume consisting of Chris Brown, K. Michelle, Keri Hilson, Monica, 112, Queen Naija, Johnny Gill, Isaac Caree, Trey Songz Chante Moore, etc. I’ve worked overseas and had a number 1 record in Russia. I’ve been blessed for sure. There are many ways to be successful in the music industry, but my way consists of two main ingredients; Quantity AND Quality… I focus on always being able to provide multiple records to artists.
Not just records they think are cool, but songs they love. Outside of maybe three of those artists I listed earlier, the majority of artists I’ve worked with have taken at least 4 or 5 records at a time. Also, I’m 30, so I’m big bro and little bro at the same time. Young enough to be innovative for seasoned artists and mature to give a game to younger artists. It’s the best of both worlds.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
None. It’s all God, hard work and preparation.
