Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrika Brown.
Jerrika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got started with writing when I was 12 years old. I used journals to write anything and everything that came to mind. Music and literature have always been a way to express my self when there was just no way for me to communicate my emotions and feelings. I stand firm today because, with my story in my book Confessions Of A Boss, I faced the worse of the worst, but I wasn’t willing to give up on my hopes and dreams. I wanted to become something great, so within the verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. The main thing was I pushed through! I was a single mother taking my son to class with me while completing my college work. I pushed through therapy and dealing with being molested as a kid instead of continuing to hiding behind it. I had to push through; emotional barriers, suicide thoughts, depression, and lack of support. I had to remind myself that I was worth so much more!
I’m only strong now because I didn’t stay where my circumstances lead me. I fought back. I created the life I wanted to live. I became the mother, wife, graduate, entrepreneur, and overall success story that I wanted to be. The beauty of growth is it never stops, and you can become anything you want to be as long as you push past your circumstances and obstacles to become something and someone great.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life that gives you success or a great sense of accomplishment comes easy, especially entrepreneurship is never easy, but it’s worth it. The biggest struggles you will face as an entrepreneur are dealing with naysayers and lack of support for your dreams, business, or ideas. It is so easy to give in to the negative comments and doubt, plus there is always going to be someone telling you how you can’t do something and why you can’t do it. They are usually speaking from their level of insecurity, not yours. I tend to say God gave me this vision, and he put me on this path because it’s for me! Your dreams, ideas, and goals aren’t meant for everyone; that’s why God gave that vision to you and not everyone else.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a certified business coach, self-published author, photographer, wife, and mother. I’m known for assisting inner-city communities with business development and management. I own an operate The Browns Agency, which is a full-service business consulting agency specializing in brand development, mentoring, coaching, and start to finish business development.
I’m most proud of my book and the response it has received from the community because I’ve helped women be comfortable enough to tell their stories and not be ashamed. I had a woman tell me it’s because of your book that I’m now okay with saying that I’m not okay! Those moments make me the proudest.
What sets me apart is my personality. I don’t want to fit into what everyone else is doing. I want to create my lane and dance to the beat of my drum. I like it that way because I get to be and do what I want and not apologize for it! The goal is always to be me, and no one else can do that because it’s only one me. I love and embrace it.
