Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaid “A.Z.I” Sewer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Zaid. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a young Virgin Islander, I grew up hearing music from the Motown era and 90’s R&B, but also dancehall, soca, reggae and other Caribbean genres of music. At a young age, I would find myself drumming on desks or humming melodies. I learned to play steel pan at age five and added piano and music production to my arsenal by age 15. Writing poems and short stories turned into songs I never released. I graduated with a degree in Audio production and played keyboards in a reggae band. It was in 2015 that I lost my father and found my voice. Drowning in a sea of emotions, I turned to singing. Over time I began to gain more confidence in my voice and release more and more music. My music comes from personal experiences and observations, and I hope people can envision themselves in the themes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be lying if I said that it had been a smooth road. Lack of confidence in my gift caused me to step away multiple times. I did not like my voice at first. I did not see myself as an artist, preferring to stay in the background. Because of the support of my peers, friends and family, I am performing today. I am forever thankful. At first, I would be extremely nervous, feeling as if I was on the brink of passing out. At times, I had to take a shot to calm my nerves. Now, I don’t have to. I can feel myself growing, and I notice more and more people taking me more seriously as an artist. It feels amazing.
We’d love to hear more about your music.
I am an independent artist/producer who sings about life, love, relationship and internal struggles. I think my style of Tropical R&B, as some called it, makes me unique. I try to fuse a plethora of genres while achieving a healthy balance of novelty and nostalgia.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Releasing my song “Dominoes” is one of the proudest moments in my career. I spent countless, sleepless nights making so many revisions. From mixing the song about 18 times, playing guitar chords and melodies and being deliberate about the sound and feel I wanted to achieve, it lead to many opportunities and gaining the respect of many of my musical peers. This song lead to being asked to perform for the BeReggae Festival and being featured in the AJC, being featured in a few blogs, hearing stories about how the song is helping others to deal with their relationship issues or enough heal from break ups.
