Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni D.
Jenni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in music. Growing up, I took a liking to artists like Lil’ Wayne. The way he put words together and how his music made me feel was enough for me to be a fan of rap. For years, I watched artists like Drake and Kanye West, totally oblivious to the world of “female rap.” When I thought of rap music, I only thought about male rappers–and then I discovered Nicki Minaj. My entire world lit up when I came across her music, as she was everything I imagined a woman in the rap game would be.
After watching her videos on YouTube, listening to her mixtapes and really getting into her style, my interests in becoming a rapper began to manifest. I’d stay up until like 3 am, listening to instrumentals on my computer with my sister, just free-styling, and that’s when I knew music was my passion. I would record my raps on my iPod touch and let my family hear them. It was embarrassing at first, but I just kept getting better and better and long story short I haven’t stopped and I’m not going to stop until everyone in this world has heard a Jenni D song.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing worth fighting for is gonna be easy and I have to keep telling myself that. At one point I couldn’t get shows. I didn’t feel like my management at the time was doing what needed to be done. I was mixing business with pleasure and it just all had me in a bad place. I had to take a step back and eliminate the things that weren’t bringing me happiness. If I could give one piece of advice, it would be to think with your brain not your heart. Emotions will run you right into the ground with this business.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a rapper. Some might say a female MC, but I introduce myself as Jenni f***ing D. I’m proud of how I represent myself, and how I stand up for my people, not just in my music, but in real life as well. I want my people to win and if I gotta make these sacrifices to be able to put them in a better place, then that’s what I’m going to do. Building my brand is not just about me; it’s about what I have to offer and what I’m willing to share. I am not a normal MC. I have a lot of different talents. I’m most proud of my single “Goals.” It’s been doing very well for me and my brand, allowing me the opportunity to book shows and appearances, perform live in different places, and secure playlist placement.
Who have you been inspired by?
Michelle Obama, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé. Each of these women has blazed trails in different disciplines, allowing a variety of women to see themselves as graceful, intelligent, and powerful.
