Meet Matthew Quisling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Quisling.

Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been obsessed with capturing the best moments in life. I just wasn’t sure how exactly I wanted to do it. A couple of years ago, I brought my mom’s camera to Europe and started filming everything, including me skydiving. I spent hours editing it all together and my friends loved it, which encouraged me to start making videos for every vacation. In the meantime, I spent my time at home shooting senior portraits for classmates, publishing my work on social media. It didn’t take long for companies and individuals to start messaging me saying they wanted to shoot.

Before I knew it, I was shooting music videos for smaller artists in Downtown Atlanta and talking about a big shoot in Miami with palm trees and exotic cars. The real deal. It was all happening pretty quickly and I was beginning to realize how big of the industry there was for a kid with a camera. I loved the environment, so I kept making videos and taking pictures until I recently got the opportunity to shoot for Lil Baby. This was a huge step for me in my photography career and lately, I’ve been working with other artists under Lil Baby’s label, 4pf. So that’s really where I’m at right now.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, it’s been a pretty smooth journey because it’s always on my own time but the biggest obstacle I run into is money. All the lenses and bodies and stabilizers get expensive so I end up putting every dollar I make right back into my equipment.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I take pictures and make music/travel videos. I’ve always been proud of the fact that I truly worked my way up as an individual to get the place I’m at without any help. I used my mom’s camera to do the first couple shoots until I saved up to buy my own and from there on it’s been me spending my own money. I can’t speak on behalf of others, but I would say something that I think sets me apart from other people shooting music videos is how time-dedicated and serious I am. I go for a variety of camera angles, drone shots, multiple locations volunteer assistants, etc. rather than shooting on some apartment couch and then throwing in a bunch of edits or something.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to go back and change something, it would definitely be the first camera I bought with my own money. I bought a Sony a6300 without giving it much thought but realized less than a year later that I needed a full-frame camera if I wanted professional quality. Although the a6300 was a good camera to learn on and introduced me to the mirrorless model, this mistake cost me roughly a thousand dollars which I certainly could’ve used.
