Today we’d like to introduce you to Laquita Mitchell.
Laquita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business in 2016 with $200 dollar on a fixed income. At the time I was currently finishing up my maintenance treatment. I was diagnosed with APL Leukemia on Thanksgiving in 2012. Fighting cancer was very challenging it changed my life but I will never question God’s journey he never puts to much on us than we can bear. After kicking cancer’s butt I became infatuated with learning how to take control of my health. I started working out 5-6 days a week. I wanted to make a difference, motivate people to become their best selves through clean eating and working out. I knew my testimony alone was motivation to help others to take control of their health. I’m from Mississippi and we love to eat but obesity is a major problem, so it was most definitely a market for fitness when I first started back in 2015. I wanted to be the best, but I also knew I couldn’t do it alone.
I started training with one of the best trainers in Jackson, Mississippi (Terry Cooper), to become a Fitness Trainer. I fell completely in love with fitness and I mean everything about it. Being a fitness trainer I was in the gym 5-6 days a week and I started paying attention to fitness apparel and I wasn’t pleased. I was really tied of seeing the same old boring fitness wear. I wanted to see something different, chic fashion fitness wear. Fitness apparel that you can wear to the gym, lunch, running errands, shopping or a night out on the town so I started my own fitness apparel line. So Chic Fitness Apparel was established Sept. 17, 2017. How did I get to where I’m at today ?? I think that answer is a lot of heavy praying, tunnel vision, a supportive husband and my supporters that believed in me since day one.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely Not !!! It has not been a smooth road. I did everything the hard way and I had to learn from all my mistakes. I have struggled financially, with marketing and staying consistent when the money wasn’t coming back fast enough on some investments I’ve made. I had no one to tell me right from wrong in business. However, I stayed positive and I turn all my Ls into lessons. I don’t think entrepreneurship gets easy. It’s always a new level and more to learn daily, but it’s most definitely worth it and I wouldn’t change my journey for anything because I can truly say I love what I do.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the So Chic Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
My company offers fitness training, fitness apparel, waist shaper, resistance bands, etc. I would say I’m more known for my chic, fashionable fitness apparel and my waist shapers. I’m proud of how much my company has grown, but It seems like I’m just getting started. Currently, I’m working on my own luxury collection super excited about that I can’t wait to see all my dreams and hard work come together. I can’t really answer what sets me apart from others because I feel like no one has the same visions, so most of the time I’m tunnel vision in my own lane.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is so different from when I first started. Social media has changed everything. Fitness has become the thing to do these days. The industry has grown so much. I think virtual training and online programs have really changed the game in 2020. In my opinion I believe 5-10 years from now we’re going to see a lot of millionaires in the fitness industry.
